Just wondering if anyone can help with some queries we have about landing. My husband received his CoPR in November and we have until September to land. We are heading over to Canada for a short trip in March and we were planning on having him do the landing then. After our trip in March, we're heading back to Europe to pack up and will be moving in early June as our work visa here expires then. So the problem here is it takes ages for the PR card to be issued - 100 days (why so long?!) and it is unlikely it would arrive at my parents Canadian address before we have to leave here.

1. Is there a way to get urgent processing on the card?
2. I know there is a Travel Document he can apply for - does anyone know how long they take? Ours would go through Vienna.
3. Alternatively, would it be better for us to defer his landing until we move in June? If so, what do we need to say at Immigration at Pearson? And is there any problem doing this? He's from a visa exempt country (Australia) and we'll be travelling on 5 March, before the new ETA comes into place from what I understand.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I would suggest that you land as planned, then depending on your province of residence apply for his Health Card right away. You can do that even with a 90 day waiting period (such as in Ontario) and they will just wait and send the Health Card just before eligibility kicks in.

Sounds like you'll be overseas long enough to get a PRTD, but I'll leave it for someone with experience to concur or contradict that assumption on my part.

Hi, I was planning kind of doing the same but someone in the forum said that is illegal or a fraud to apply for the health card if you have not lived in Canada ( my case Ontario) for 3 months

you can see my specific case and post here : http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/health-card-t395989.0.html

I just want to know what is true and not do something illegal.

thanks

Thanks for the info, but I was concerned about the PR card as its unlikely to arrive before we need to re-enter Canada.

Sounds like you should wait until June to land. He can enter as a visitor when you go in March and just let them know he'll be doing his official landing as a PR in June if they ask.

Hope this helps a little!

The PR cards do take FOREVER... I "flag-pole" landed from the US last June after being here in Canada as a visitor for 3 months (we applied outland in January 2015). I got a letter that I needed to send new photos for my card in October and finally got my PR card in December.

Can someone tell me how long it takes to get travel documents from Islamabad? My husband wants to land and then go back to finish up his contract which will end in September

Thanks - we were thinking landing in June would be best as we don't want to risk having him not be allowed to re-enter Canada without the PR card. How does it even take 100 days to issue a PR card?! CIC makes my face hurt......

When we go in March, I suppose we just say he's coming as a visitor now and we will be landing formally in June. Does any one have any experience doing this? We will likely bring his COPR just in case the agent asks to see it and perhaps even fill out the B4 forms.

I did it but it was before the new eTA came into effect and I'm from the U.S. - looks like he does need one. Since it's an online application I hope that means it would be fast... ;)

Make sure he stresses that he is a visitor (no intention to work, etc.) and doesn't bring all or a lot of his stuff until he lands - he's not really supposed to until he's officially a PR. If you need to bring a lot in March, claim it all on your form as a returning Canadian.

Apart from travel you can get a lot done with just the COPR and without the actual PR card - I got my SIN, OHIP, etc. all set up right away (and got a job) before my card finally arrived.

Have him get an ETA before he lands as PR (assuming it doesn't take too long to get). Then he can board an airline as a "visitor" to Canada (visa-exempt) but present his signed COPR to the CBSA as a PR.
