Hey everyone, so Im landing on Monday in calgary, Iv been back home for a year so my alberta health and sin are all expired, I cant see anything anywhere about needing medical insurance when I land and whether or not i can apply for Alberta health on day 1 or if it has a 3 month waiting period... can anyone help with this? I dont need travel insurance do i? Or can I be turned around without it?

Also, when I file my taxes this year in canada, do I have to claim foreign (English) income and do I need to prove it? I dont think I have anything that shows how much I earned. Its only been about 11 thousand pounds..

And finally, the list of items travelling with and after, is that necessary? I have no items travelling after and with me will only be clothes/laptop/phone and wash items... is it a proper form I have to fill out or just type it and print? I thought I just turn up with copr and passport but now worrying about these forms and medical coverage....
Any help will be greatly appreciated as this forum helped alot with the whole process... im almost done!

Cheers

After you land in Calgary, just go to the registry and get your health card. No coverage for dental so buy a private insurance if you think you'll need one.

Second you don't file taxes this year. All earnings for this year will be filed for next year's tax season.

Third, that's not a problem. If you feel you don't need a list then don't make a list. Just make sure you declare whatever is there to declare. You'll know because they'll give you a customs card and you'll get a list there to declare. Hope this helps.

Cheers, thats a releif with the medical insurance!

However, when I file my Canadian t4 from 2015, (I worked last year till April in canada and have worked in England from about June till this month) I will have to declare any earnings from yhe UK for the 2015 tax year correct? I just don't know how I can prove it though. I have filed in Canada 2011 2012 2013 and 2014 (laast April correct?) But have never worked back in my home country till this year, so I am confused... thanks in advance if anyone has any advice!!

Now That's complicated. I suggest you get turbotax or go to HR block for your tax prep.
One more thing. before you go to the registry to get your Health card, I suggest you get your new SIN first from service Canada. The registry will need your new SIN to process your health card. Welcome back to Canada.

If you worked in Canada in 2015 and got paid you need to file the tax form, and within 2 weeks.

Yes you need to declare UK income, this is (depending upon your point of view) a good thing as it likely means a massive rebate. I got a decent rebate almost entirely because I started working in Canada 6 weeks into the year. I didn't have to prove anything about the UK income, I just started when I landed in Canada from the UK and I think the amount earned in the UK, you'll want to do the opposite defining when you left.
If you need proof, a bank statement showing the income and pay stubs are likely your best bet. You want to keep these at least 6 years.

You can also file a UK tax form P85 with parts 2 and 3 of your P45 (likely now? UK tax year is around April 5th) that will give you a break on the period in which you worked in Canada.
I got a few hundred pounds when I did this but note that you need the latest copy of the form and it must be a actual printed signature, not one you've scanned in and had someone in the UK print and post.

Either way, I'd strongly recommend getting one of the two below to at least review your form. TurboTax did seem quite good except they told me I could file through NETFILE with a temporary SIN which I'm glad I personally spotted as incorrect. If you SIN expired ... that indicates it was a temporary one (starting with a 9) in which case you, like me, need to file a paper copy.

On the entry/landing, you'll be doing a normal Canadian customs form. As long as you are not entering with > $800 of goods that you didn't leave Canada with you should be fine.
If you bought a new laptop back home and are now importing it, you should declare that though. Only your first entry is completely tax free. I declared $750 worth of new goods from my last trip "home" and they were fine with a printed list in Excel showing each item with cost in local and foreign currency. Did I need an excel sheet - no... but they guy gave me a look that indicated I was going to secondary until I asked if he wanted it. Better be prepared than not.

Good luck on your landing, Spring is finally here in (southern) Canada :) Excepting the rock of course.

You won't be denied entry for not having health insurance. Personally I'd buy a weeks worth even if you can (I think you can in AB, it's 3 months in ON) get it on entry. Because if you are ill while in the process of getting it sorted you are liable. A few days/week won't be expensive.

One last thought, I had problems getting my OHIP (health card) because they wanted proof of address. I don't know if this is specific to Ontario but I was rejected twice for not having enough proof of address.
I got it on my 3rd attempt though was told I shouldn't have been approved then because the letter from my workplace confirming I lived at an address (bonkers right) was printed and they wanted to see ink on the page. You likely know how easy this will be from the previous trip; but I'd say this is +1 on temporary health care. Personally.
