Hello! Just reading through the landing procedure on the CIC website, and they say you need to declare all "new" items. Well this seems like a bit of a headache! I might be buying some new personal items (hair dye, toothpaste, etc) not to mention Christmas gifts I may not have opened... should this go on a seperate sheet? And between Form B4 and B4A that leaves me with roughly 30-35 blank spaces. And my understanding is that I can group things, correct? "Box of Clothes - Value CAN $100". Can I use more than one B4A? Thank you very much!

Note: And probably a box of new dry-food goods.

No, they are only interested in new big ticket items, like cars, stereos, etc. They don't care about toothpaste. You can use as many sheets as you need.

When I landed they didn't really ask me anything. They just had me verify the info on my COPR and sign & initial a couple places. The only only question they asked me was "Why would you want to move here from Hawaii??" LOL.

Thank you! I appreciate all the help! Another thing is, my sister wants to bring home-made cookies with almond bits in them. Not sure how we're going to swing that one ::)

Hi nyssa,

Don't add the cookies to your list ;D. Just leave them in the car. They never even looked at my stuff (or opened the truck!). I did declare one new (Christmas) item but the rest was all boxed and ready for moving. I grouped my stuff into categories (dishware/pots/pans, clothing, office stuff, etc). The only thing they asked about was jewelry of "significant value." They wanted it listed separately from accessories and costume jewelry.

I agree with Alison -although my car *was* searched when I moved back from the US, but I was importing my car at the same time. Well, the car wasn't really searched exhaustively, but they looked around and asked if we would open the trunk etc.... I don't think I would worry too much about homemade cookies. I think the real concern is raw nuts/seeds, although, honestly, if asked about them, I wouldn't even mention the nuts. Just say oh, that's a batch of cookies I baked up yesterday.

Thanks for asking this, I was wondering too!

We are putting our ETA to land as December 28th, so obviously, we'll have the kids new Christmas gifts!

Returning residents have an exemption to the "new" goods rule if they have been gone for 5 or more years.

"To qualify for duty- and tax-free importation, you must have owned, possessed and used the goods for at least six months prior to your return to live in Canada. The six-month stipulation is waived if you have been away from Canada for five years or more.

Replacement goods are also exempt from the six-month requirement. To qualify for the exemption, the goods must be replacements for goods that would have met the six-month ownership, possession and use requirements, except for the fact that they were lost or destroyed as the result of a fire, a theft, an accident or another unforeseen circumstance. In addition, replacement goods must be of a similar class and about the same value as the goods they are replacing."

Additionally, new residents only have to have "used" the item, they do not have to have owned it for 6 months.

"To import goods duty- and tax-free, Settlers must have owned, possessed and used the goods prior to their arrival in Canada and Former Residents must have owned, possessed and used the goods for at least six months before returning to resume residence."

Thanks Heather, it's silly how quickly I forget! I remember you telling me about this in another spot.
So worst case my 'husband' can claim those things as his. Thanks!

I dont think you will have any problem because he has been gone for 5+ years and you are a new settler. Between you both you should be able to bring pretty much anything you want! LOL

Lol :) And technically, the kids who will get the gifts are new settlers too even if they are Canadian, they've never lived there.

It's just the one car we might pay on, that's over 10K, and in just my hubbys name.
