If it helps anyone, we have been staying in the GTA for almost 4 years and can confirm the following -
- We rent a 4 bedroom house in Markham for $2000 per month (we have 2 boys so didn't want to stay downtown)
- we have an SUV after upgrading from a sedan for the main reason that we wanted to do long road trips and needed a more spacious and comfortable car - the plus point was that it was actually cheaper on insurance than the sedan!
- we budget around $500 per week for groceries, gas money, transit for my husband and extras eg trips to the cinema or dinner out
- Internet/tv $180 per month but can be cheaper if you go with a lesser package. We pay approx $300 per month for utilities but usually end up with a credit at the end of the year.
Winters can be harsh but the city is well prepared for it and transit continues to operate. The summers can be amazing and certainly make up for the cold of winter! There is so much that goes on in the city during summer that you're never bored and a lot of things are free!
I'm more than happy to answer any questions.
