Landing in different province

Hi again folks

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's okay to land in a different province to the one you intend to end up in.

We are moving to NS in September of next year, but husband needs to land this year. Flights between now and hristmas to halifax are super expensive so wondering if it's possible for him to land at Toronto instead.

Anyone have any experience?

Thanks!

Kate

Yes, just don't land in Quebec without a CSQ. It might be OK, but you want to avoid the extra possible hassle.

I see that you sponsored him so in that case, there is no need for him to land in Halifax. However, if you are living in Halifax at the moment they may ask him why he is not joining you or if you are currently in the UK, they may ask him if you are not joining him. He should just tell them the truth, he needs to do a fast landing now before his visa expires and needs to go back immediately and finish a work contract in the UK or whatever reason he wants to stay longer there.

One thing he should do while in Toronto is get his SIN so it's over and done with. That is because having admitted he is doing a quick landing and will not be at a Canadian mailing address you want to use when the PR card arrives, odds are that they will refuse the address and not mail the PR card. This is not a huge problem because he can get a PR travel document in order to return next year. He will however have to arrange the PR card on his return and this will take a couple of months during which he will need a SIN if he's planning on working. Normally it would not be a problem to get a SIN with a COPR less than one year old but if it is more than one year old, it can not be used for a SIN so better for him to get that right away after he lands.

Thanks very much for the responses, links18 and Leon.

Leon, I have a couple of further questions based on the info you've given...

Yep, I sponsored my husband, but neither of us will be living in Canada until we've sold our flat/finished our jobs etc by about September of next year, so I think he can easily explain that to the officer when he lands.

In terms of his PR card, we had thought of giving him the address of my cousin in NS, so they could send the card there, and my cousin could forward it on to us in the UK, before we need to travel to NS again. Would that be acceptable? I know I've read elsewhere that people do give family addresses etc for their PR cards, but if hus is already landing in a different province, we don't want to make things complicated or look strange to the officer who lands him.

in terms of a SIN card, we thought we'd do all that when we go over for our 'final arrangements before we move' trip next summer. Then we should be all set when we actually move in September.

What do you think?

Thanks so much for all your help!

Getting the SIN next summer should be fine, as long as he does before his COPR is one years old, that is unless he gets the PR card in the meantime, then he can drag it on as long as he likes.

Giving the cousins address is something that a lot of people do and get away with. Most people who are doing a quick landing probably don't even say so to the IO and aren't asked either so whatever address they give is usually accepted. However, immigration doesn't want PR cards to get lost so if they become aware that the person is doing a short landing and will not be at the address when the card arrives in the mail, they can refuse the address. If this happens, it sometimes works to call CIC the next day and say that you didn't have an address when you landed and now you do and give the same address again that got refused. I know of people having done that. If that doesn't work and he is unable to give an address within 6 months of landing, he loses his chance at his first free PR card so in that case, he'd have to go to Canada on a PRTD and apply for a PR card from inside Canada, getting new photos and paying $50. It would then be treated as a renewal and the processing time is slightly longer.

Thanks very much for all this info! So much that I didn't know!

As a result, husband has decided to land in Halifax (flights booked for mid-Nov!), and will get his SIN whilst he's there this time, rather than wait until next year.

He will give cousin's address, but if they reject it then we'll have to pay for a new card when we go back next summer/spring.

Not having the PR card is only an issue for travelling, right? If we get to Canada in September next year, provide our permanent address, and don't receive the card for 6 months, husband can still work and whatnot without the PR card? That's my understanding...but if I'm wrong then I dunno what we'll do!

Thanks again for all your help!

Well, he didn't actually have to land in Halifax but that's ok.

Not having the PR card is just a travel issue. In order to return to Canada, he can either apply for a PRTD or go to the US and cross at the land border.

He can work with his SIN. Does not need a PR card. However, some employers might ask for a PR card to verify his status. He can show his landing documents and try to explain that his PR card got lost in the mail or whatever.

I landed in Surrey, BC, but I was headed to Halifax, NS. There was no problem, but they did specifically ask why we were landing in a difference province to the one we planned to live in. (It was because we were driving across Canada and they were cool with that.)

Landing in Quebec is okay if you can provide address in other province and onward ticket. I did that. I'm citizen now

How did you land in Surrey, by car?
