Hi,

I am landing in canada next week with my wife. I need to show CAD14000 as proof of settlement. I know that if you are bringing in more than $10000 you need to declear it. My queries are:

1) We are 2 persons, so in effect, each of us will be carrying $7000, Do we still need to declear
2) At the immigration, they need to see the sum up, so is it acceptable for them that I ve not declear it at customs and we show them 14000 now.

3) Is it fine to show the amount in USD in stead of CAD?

Thank you

3) ofcourse its fine to show the USD as proof of funds

Regarding 1 and 2, i think you'll be fine...but just to assure you - declaration is not an issue, you don't have to worry about it - or try to think of ways to avoid it.

If you are the principal applicant i would advise you to own and declare the whole amount ($14,000) as the officer will be only asking the principal applicant for the PoF, your wife will not be asked any questions.

Customs expects people settling to be carrying over $10,000 regularly. It's usually no added delay to declare this, especially when first arriving.

If you're trying to find ways not to declare it, then this will raise all types of warning flags with customs. That would be more likely to delay you than just declaring it in the first place.
