So I'm going to be landing in mid april in BC while my fiance and I are on vacation down there. There is a very good possibility that I will have a job to come back to in Alberta by then, so I'm wondering if I can get my SIN from a Service Canada while in BC? That way I don't have to wait to come back to Alberta to get one. Or do I have to get it in Alberta in order for it to be valid?

Your SIN is valid anywhere in Canada, regardless of where it was issued. If you're really concerned though, just wait to get to Alberta before applying for one. It takes about 10 minutes to get a SIN if you apply in person at a Service Canada office with all the necessary documents. It's just the card itself that will take about 10 business days to to get to you through the mail.

Your SIN number is a Federal Government document, so the province in which it is issued is irrelevant. Either way though, it only takes a few minutes to be issued a SIN so you can do it whenever you choose.

Thanks everyone. I'm already in Alberta and have been living here for the past two years (just got my PR though). So I looked on Service Canada's website and found out I can actually get my SIN with just my COPR and passport, so I think I'm going to go get it tomorrow before I officially land.

I think you will have to land officially before you get your SIN though. They'll be looking for your passport, and particularly the stamp in it from when you have officially landed.

Hi, I have same question but little different ,

I am working in BC on LMIA closed work permit, My wife will come on SOWP in Vancouver to me, but i spoke to one of my friend living in another province and he advised to send her on different province Manitoba or Alberta as they have a job opportunity, so is it mandatory to get SIN, bank account, health card and ID from BC or she can also get these from Manitoba as well ? Will there be any complications? Is it allowed? Will I or my wife face any problems in future for PR or anything else?

Please advise

She has received an SOWP based on your closed WP in BC so she can join you in BC not move to another province and live apart. If you want to move to another province you should apply for jobs on these provinces and secure another closed WP.
