Dear Frenz,
What a beautiful experience !!!!
I landed in the Canadian soil @ Windsor, Detroit yesterday. It was a pleasant and a different experience.
Here is my story//
We (me, my wife, our 8 months old kid) all started on on our drive from Iowa on Saturday (05/26) evening and reached Detroit Sunday morning. We checked in @ the Marriott, Renaissance Center around 3 PM and rested Sunday evening.
There was a "Technofest" music festival, so the city of Detroit was truly busy with a lot teens \ youngsters with cool attire. I gather all the documentation needed for landing on Monday morning and had plans to complete landing and SIN at once.
Started to drive through the tunnel from Mariott around 10:00 AM and passed US border (after paying the toll). Went to the counter no.3 (my fav number) and the offiver at the POE greeted us and asked us the reason why we were there
POE Officer : Why are here and what are you guys planning to do ?
Me: We are here to complete our landing formalities.
POE Officer : Could you pull down those windows please, so I can take a look at the people inside?
Me: Yes sir.
POE Officer : How long are you going to stay here? Are you moving in today ?
Me : I am going to stay for about 6 weeks until I receive my PR card. Then, I will head back to the US to complete my current project.
POE Officer : Thanks. Hello to my "Wife". And asked me are you carrying any firearms, do you have any criminal records?
Me: NO, No.
POE Officer : How much of cash are you carrying in?
Me : XXX
POE Officer : Any gifts for friends in Canada?
Me: No.
POE Officer : Handed over a yellow-slip and gave me directions to go the immigration office.
I drove to the Immigration office and parked the car and headed inside. There were hardly anyone landing yesterday, so the counters were all empty.
IMO : Can I help you?
Me: We have come here for landing.
IMO: Oh, good. Do you have the papers with you ?
Me: Handed over the COPR and Passports for all three of us.
IMO: Do you have the "Goods to follow list"
Me: Yes, here it is. (I had filled it and signed it already, which made here very happy).
IMO: Nice, thats good !
Me: Haded over the copies of the photographs of the gold jewels I was planning to carry, but she didnt take it. She siad, I dont need these photographs.
Have you listed all these here itemized?
Me: Yes, I did.
IMO :Nice. All these items can be carried over into Canada duty free. Any items you carry other than the list is subject to exercise duty.
Me: Sure.
IMO : How long do you intend to stay ? Are you ving in today ?
Me: I am going to stay until we get our PR cards and then head-back to USA. We will land for good in Canada in a few months.
IMO : Ok. Please take your seat and I shall call you once I am done with the paper work.
Me: Waited for about 30 minutes.
IMO: Hello again. Please stop-over.
Me: I went to the counter again and signed the COPR for me and my kid. Then my wife.
IMO : Handed-over all the documents and you are all set.
I was little upset that no one "Welcomed" us into Canada, but still, it was a nice and pleasant experience.
Then we headed to Service Canada and applied for our SIN numbers. (Truly, go there by 8:30 AM or 9 AM to avoid wait times).
We got our SIN numbers and gave our friends's address in Canada to be shipped.
Then went to a duty-free shop and bought a few items with "CANADA" word on it. (like hats, watches, t-shirts, fridge magnets).
Truly, the feeling of becoming a Permenant Resident is amazing and fantastic.
Then we came back to the car and realized that there was a parking violation ticket. So, went to the office nearby at (1266 Mcdougall ave) and explained them the sitation.
The person at the desk said, it is okay this time, but take it seriously from next time.
Then we headed back to the USA.
Overall, it was a nice expereince. Becoming a PR of Canada has always been my dream and it became a reality yesterday.
THANKS to all forum members who contributed in one way or other persue my dream.
