@ Francomaj,
welcome done oga...... i av decided to bring the discussion here for easy referencing since u already are landed.
ok, as per the language school aw long can one stay and from what u av seen aw long does it take for pple to start picking up.....
2) as per the CSQ, is there a replacement for it when it expires cos.it expires in 3years after issuance.....
3) also the CSQ is somehow large, are we supposed to go about with it..... or something more portable will be issued when landed.....
let me stop here b4 other questions go roll..... thanks....... VIVE le Montreal
Hi Egrace,

Thanks for your questions.

1. You can withdraw from the language course at any point in time. It works this way: There are 3 levels--- more like Levels 1, 2, & 3. At the point of registration, you will be asked to undergo some form of language evaluation after which you would be assigned to a level that corresponds to their perception of your level of proficiency in French. Each level lasts three (3) months... and if you pass your end-of level exams, you'd be 'promoted' to the next. With an intermediate level of French, I would expect that you be assigned to level 2, which translates to 6 months (3 months each for levels 2 & 3) at the most to complete the language immersion program. You may, however, withdraw at any point in time like I said earlier.

2. Don't worry about the CSQ expiring before you get to Canada. It wont. Besides, you wont have to bother about getting it replaced once you get here.

3. No, you wont be required to carry your CSQ about. Should any Government agency or school need a copy, they'd ask you to come by with the original.

Best,

Francomaj

Hi,

Gatineau and Hull are one and the same--- having agreed to merge a few years ago. Now, the city of Gatineau/Hull is in the province of Quebec (and, of course, very close to the Ottawa in the province of Ontario). Try and picture Gatineau and Ottawa the same way as Surulere & Yaba. As a matter of fact, people live in Gatineau and work in Ottawa. You cannot, however, live in Quebec city (capital of Quebec province) and work in Gatineau/Hull due to the distance between the two cities. It's akin to living in Ibadan and working in Ilorin.

Now, if you're hoping to circumvent the use of French by living in Hull, you'll be in for a surprise because (1) Hull is in Quebec just as Montreal is (2) You can use English in Hull just as much as you can in Montreal. You also need to note that Ottawa, being the Federal Capital Territory is also bilingual. This doesn't mean you can't find work due to being anglophone, it only points towards better pay for bilingual employees.

In conclusion, I'll recommend taking advantage of the language immersion course with a view to improving your French, as the social and economic/financial advantages of being bilingual in Canada (Anglophone Canada inclusive) far outweigh the convenience of monolingualism, i.e. using just English. Do I get the impression that you're scared stiff of the supposed linguistic challenges associated with living in Quebec? You'd be surprised to learn, when you get here, that there are far too many non-French speaking Nigerians, Ghananians, Americans, Brits etc al in Montreal who go about their daily business with their English and somewhat limited knowledge of French. Fret not.

Best,

Francomaj

Hi Egrace,

The French course will definitely go a long way, but at the end of the day, it's up to the individual to practice it on a constant basis. Your French wont improve if you shy away from speaking it. The course runs both full-time (generally 8am - 4pm) and part-time (4-8pm). Full-time students qualify for the bursary while part-timers don't.

Private Health insurance is not compulsory at all! I wouldn't touch it with a 200 metre barge pole unless my health situation was kind of shaky.

Hi Fiirm,

The banking sector, like most other professional sectors, is regulated to some extent, depending on the level you're aspiring to work at. If you were to work as a clerk (collecting money at the counter and processing cheques et al), then your banking qualifications might suffice. This is a good starting point from where you can work your way up. However, due to stiff local competition for such jobs, you might want to take a short 3 month refresher (certificate or diploma) course in banking and Finance, accounting or a related field so as to put yourself on the same pedestal as those citizens and permanent residents who derive pleasure in using their Canadian qualifications as a bargaining chip.

Yes, you can change professions. To do this, however, you may have to forget about your BA or BSc for the time being, and revert back to college-level education in order to acquire the requisite qualifications for your intended occupation. A few schools like McGill Uni offer Post Graduate courses in Nursing for people with non-nursing related BAs and BScs, but to be absolutely honest with you, spots on these programs are very few and competitive.

For PhD programs in Finance, google Concordia and McGill Universities to start with. There are too many of them to mention on here.

It's also important to note that the pieces of advice I give on here are subjective and should not in any way be construed as legal advice. By 'subjective', I mean that they are based on my interpretation of how the system works, especially for immigrants. You will be officially 'advised' by the Immigration ministry on how to make the system work for you on arrival in Canada.

Best,

Francomaj

Hello Abehola,

Chances of getting a grant or scholarship cannot be determined before hand as they are normally a function of the amount of funding available to your department of choice versus the number of students qualified for such funding. The Quebec Loans and Bursary program is, however, open to all and sundry but subject to your earnings the previous year. If, for instance, your annual income for 2010 was $40,000, you wont get as much in bursary in 2011 as someone who earned $20k during the same fiscal year.

Cheers
