First of all, let me tell you that all (a to e) are house but their structure and form differentiate them. The structure here comprises of Detached house, Semi detached, town house, condo and apartment

a. Detached Houses: These are houses built in a stand alone form. Just like the way we build our houses in Naija. It can be 3 or 4 bedrooms and 2 or more wash rooms. Mostly 2 storey with the rooms at the second floor; kitchen, living room and main entrance at the ground level floor while the basement is the one below the ground level. Laundry is mainly at the basement if not rented out. Rent could be btw $1400 and $1800/month in addition to rent, you have to pay for utilities like light, water, heating and pack snow. You are performing the role of a landlord in a rented house

b. Semi detached: These are houses in which two are built together with spaces by the sides in which you have right only on the space by your house while the other landlord has the other space. Mostly 2 storey with the rooms at the second floor; kitchen, living room and main entrance at the ground level floor while the basement is the one below the ground level. Laundry is mainly at the basement if not rented out. Rent btw $1200 and $1600/month and you have to pay for utilities like light, water, heating and pack snow. You are performing the role of a landlord in a rented house

c. Town Houses: These are houses built together in a row without space in between except at the extreme ends Their length can span a whole street. Mostly 2 storey with the rooms at the second floor; kitchen, living room and main entrance at the ground level floor while the basement is the one below the ground level. Laundry is mainly at the basement if not rented out. Apart from paying mortgage and for other utilities monthly maintenance fee is also charged by management of that compound. Unlike detached or semi detached that do not warrant monthly maintenance fee.

d. Condos: These are mostly high risers that each unit is mainly owned by individual but most of them are rented out as investment properties. Mostly 1,2 and 3 rooms. Though built in apartment form, but unlike apartments, they are designed to give more comforts as they are equipped with more amenities like washing machine and parking slot. Monthly maintenance fee is included. If you are renting condo, your landlord (The original owner of the unit) would have added it to your rent cost. Rent is btw $1000 an $1400

e. Apartments: They are mostly high risers too like condos but they are built and managed by a company, organisational bodies or developers. Mostly, 1,2 or 3 rooms with stove and fridge inclusive (Normal standard for all houses.) Washing machines are mostly in central room and paid for as per usage. Rent is btw $800 and $1300 based on structure, location, age of properties and other factors. No snow packing and no compound cleaning except within your apartment.

f: Basement: Basements too are rented out cost bt $600 and $1000. With separate entrance bot below the ground level

If you are a family of 4 apartment will be the best option for you.

Hope this helps. Other landed can pls add more.

Thanks pa Oloye for the detailed response to pa Jackson question and thanks for sparing us the time. I personally would not like the apartment because you said washing machine is central, i prefer to have it in my flat, also you mentioned no snow packing but i cant imagine packing snow myself omo i go freeze!!!!!! but i guess our purse will determine the type eventually.

@Dream Team
Thanks on the advise about learning skills infact many landed persons have mentioned it and i wonder why CIC is asking for Accountants, doctors and engineers why not just ask for plumbers and electrician? anyways my brothers on the thread Pa Right, Naija Pikin and the rest please think of which one you can learn and perfect within the time frame available to you.

Apartment will not be the best for you as even management may decline you due to size of your family. There are certain ages that male and female kids cannot share a room. Infact, the system frowns at it. That is not to say that families do not do it, they do it very well. But, God forbid, if there is any issue that involves official visiting your house and discoveres that you are using 2 rooms and kids are jam-packed there, it may eventually result in Children Aid officials being invited. The most valued thing in this country are children followed by women, your dog, cat, ---- then men are in the last position. Sorry for sounding-off, that is just the reality. so kids are important in room setting

Town house will be the best bet for you. but you can as well get a three-room apartment.

Hope this helps. Other landed can pls add.

Snow parking is inevitable in Town house, semi detached and detached house and it is even an offence not to pack your snow as any damage to anybody due to excessive snow in your compound may result in you taking care of the bill.

The size of your family will determine the house you will get.

Hope this helps? Other Landed can pls add.

@Kscider, you can get what you want to get, depends on your faith, focus and desires. Here, your best qualification is faith, and again let it be said that the best mode of application in Canada is to show your face where you want to get a job. Enjoy your journey to Canada

I agree with Oloye's post. You must pack your snow, it is your responsibility. If someone (e.g. post office guy, newspaper delivery person) comes to your door and slips and fall, you can be sued. In addition to Oloye's post, you can also pay someone to do it for you (most people dont except very elderly people); expect to do it yourself. Honestly, dont worry too much about it, just like you get used to driving with soo many pot holes in Nigeria, you will most likely get used to the snow too..

You can escape snow packing in some town houses. There are some town-houses that are more like a condo (ie. you are only responsible for inside maintainance but not ouside maintainance). You pay maintenance fee every month (300 to 800 dollars). With this maintenance fee, the management is responsible for anything outside your home. As you can see, paying 600 bucks for maintenance is a whole lot of money (except you are old or have some health condition that makes you unable to pack snow). If you have no major health condition (especially if you are a guy between 18 and 50 years), I suggest you simply make up your mind to get used to it.

For a new immigrant family of 6, 3 bedroom apartment may be the best (2 in each room). As Oloye said, this also depends on the gender of the children (for example, you cannot have a 12 year old girl and a 14 year old teenager in the same room). If it is two boys and 2 girls, its easy to divide. If it is all girls or all boys, its easy to divide (2 in each room). If it is one boy and 3 girls or 1 girl and 3 boys, its a bit more complicated.

Hope this helps!!

I submitted my document to Accra visa office in 2011. My status changed to in process on January 27, 2012.

It was also written that a letter was dispatch to my address on January 27, 2012. It was stated that I should consider delay in mailing system before contacting the visa office.

Today is February 25, 2012. Almost a month later, I have not received any letter. When exactly should i contact visa office?

Please advise.

Didn't you get a letter from them via email? Usually such letters are also sent into mailbox. You may consider checking your spam mail too for the letter.

All the best.
