To start with, certifications are quite important. I am an InfoSec professional with some few Certs too (CISSP, ISSAP, Cisco Sec., etc)
But you need to know that Certs can only get you a foot in the door, you need real experience in your field of choice to maintain that job.
Focus on the field where you have real experience or relevant training. If you are a Network Engineer, focus on doing relevant certs (CCNP,CCIE, etc.) instead of wasting money doing Certs in fields where you have no experience.
This is where the difference lies with Nigeria. Ultimately, it will boil down to what you know to back up the Certs and not just passing exams.
Additionally, you can also use sites like PayScale and glassdoor to get an understanding of compensations for Certs.
