I think there is some confusion among new immigrants about declaring it, while bringing their jewelry to Canada. According to my knowledge and our experience, there is no need of photographs if your wife does not have a large quantity of jewelry. If there are too many ornaments like different types of necklaces, bangles, chains, anklets, waist chains, ear rings and what not...., it is always better to picture them ( not by wearing ), placed on a table well arranged, to view and identify. This photos will avoid taking out the ornaments out of the bag and displaying to the customs in front of others. Just tell the total value and approx weight. No need for bills of purchase.

If she has only reasonable quantity, say around 150 to 200 grams, for her use, she can just tell the customs that she has some additional jewelry in her hand bag too. But there is no problem, if she has pictures of it taken together or individually. No body at the arriving airport will question for bringing some personal jewelry.

>>>Take photographs, make a list and on the list write the items description, weight with your assessed value in terms of CAD. No bills will be required. The photographs and list should be in duplicate.
2) Do we have to take pictures of jewllery we have wearing ..right now .. . ???
>>> You dont have to wear and take photographs.

Hi Explorer,
I am saying do we have to take pictures of jewllery (ONLY) which we are wearing ??? .... NOT ... "have to wear and take photographs" ...

one of my in-laws recently landed in Canada here what they did:

  • Took the pictures of the individual sets (either they wear it or not)
  • Took the pictures of all the small tops which ladies do wear (only gold, silver, diamond (i have no idea about artificial))
  • Got the valuation certificate from the Jeweller on thr letter head, with gold rate * weight = local currency value and in last column taking standard conversion rate local currency to CAD $ and showing the worth in CAD $
  • doing the valuation of each and everything and getting signed of on colour prints of Jewellery
  • on safe side making 2 copies of every document (may be you need to submit it to customs)

we will be doing the same when we will be landing there. do share your experience if you reach before us :)
