Hi,

Me and My family currently reside in US and we got our COPR. We are planning to perform our landing by passing through US Canada Border in our own CAR. We bought a new CAR here at US about a Year back..

I have Question though...

A. Can i use my US Car Insurance ( i have Geico) to cross Border to Canada. I heard if you are Visitor, you can use any existing US insurance for the duration of 45 days. But iam not sure what is the rule for a PR Landing!!. (BTW iam planning to cross Border in Ontario)

B. I do understand i need to do few modifications such as Day time running light. Is it better to do in US than Canada..?

Warm Regards
Shiva

You don't need to do the official export/import of your car at your landing. As long as you include the car on your B4 list of goods to follow, then when you do PR landing your car can enter Canada as a "visitor" still and you can worry about importing it at a later date. You need to call your US insurance company to find out how long you can keep the car in Canada and maintain your insurance coverage.

Yes you will need to get car up to Canada safety standards (so getting daytime running lights) before you can officially import the car. Not sure if it's cheaper in US or Canada, but I know most Canadian car shops are very familiar with this process.

So you could land as PR with car listed on your B4 forms, continue with car under US registration/insurance, get car up to Canada safety standards, and then book an appointment to officially import the car.

Note also you will need to own the car outright. If you are still making payments on the car from a US company, you may not be able to import it. Also depending on where the car was manufactured, it may be subject to a duty payment when you import it.

Read here for more: https://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/motorvehiclesafety/safevehicles-importation-usa-index-445.htm . Or there are hundreds of posts on this forum on this topic if you do a quick search.

to successfully export/import the car, the process is like this:

initiate the export in the AES direct export system, which either the exporter does themselves by completing a certification quiz for the system or finding a shipper to initiate it for you. The border will not accept the paperwork for your export without the ITN# that is created by this system. it is mandatory as of Oct 2. The exporter will need to apply for a tax ID# from the IRS. This is what the system uses to identify the exporter instead of SS#. Even if a shipper is used to initiate, the exporter may still be required to get a # for themselves, it can not be confirmed shippers will use their own number. It is easy to get a # by calling the IRS or applying online.

Drop off the ITN# and Original title to the border you will be crossing at least 72 hours prior to export. To find out if the border accepts a fax copy of everything you will have to call the border office to verify. for some, they will only accept original copies.

day of export: go to the export office at your border of choice, they will stamp your tilte and give it back.

to import:
after export, you need to import the car on the canadian side, so you will need to bring the paperwork from the US to the canadian immigration office. at this time, the modifications don't need to be made on your car. at this point, the import is being initiated, and border control will give you the Form 1 needed in order to get inspected.

Once you finish at the border, you have to confim with RIV they received a copy of the Form 1 from the border office because even if it was sent, it doesn't mean it was entered into their system (learned the hard way). you will also need to send the recall clearance to RIV and pay the fee (which you may not be allowed to do at the border - i was instructed to do it online) before they will release your inspection report (form 2)- which needs to be presented to the inspection service center.

once your inspection report is released, you can make an appointment with one of the authorized inspection service centers in your area (probably a canadian tire - the RIV site provides a list), where they will do the inspection for emissions, any provencial safety, and the RIV inspection. before they complete the RIV inspection, they will check for and do the modifications that are necessary. While it may be cheaper to do it in the states, it's far easier just to wait until the process is initiated before doing anything. It cost $150 to get my DTL package installed at time of inspection at canadian tire.

after inspection, the service center will fax Form 2 back to RIV to show you passed the inspection. Supposedly at this point you are clear to register the car. I haven't gotten this far yet, and will call RIV this week to confirm the import has been finalized. there are a lot of little steps that are needed and surprisingly it's not that hefty of a price tag. the RIV is pretty easy to work with, and they are very helpful over the phone. the biggest headache is figuring out how to get the export initiated into the AES direct system on the US side.

Thanks Rob_TO and rhcohen2014..

rhcohen2014 - I have an additional Question to you on my US Insurance applicability. I have Geico in US and will be using the same Insurance to drive my CAR to Canada. GEICO policy is also not clear on this.. Also i cannot get Canada Insurance until i register my CAR in Canada so the only option i have is my US Insurance..

Can you know if using US insurance is possible when i drive through the Border as Landed Immigrant.? Would like some Tips from the people who might have gone through this situation earlier..

there is no issue. the border agents are not going to care about your insurance. the export has nothing to do with registration and insurance. all they do is verify the vin# on the car, stamp your title and issue you the form 1. i use geico as well, and still continue to keep it insured with them until i switch the registration to canadian.

if you are concerned with your insurance company finding out about the export, don't be. the export is for census info only, and your insurance company will not be notified. there is a time limit for completing the RIV inspection after import and for registering your car after the inspection, so there won't be a large amount of time between import and registering it in canada.

rhcohen2014 - Thanks for your update. After reading your update i realized that i still have lien on my Title. Just few days back i have done all the payments for my CAR loan and my Car finance company will send me the Lien clearance statement.

Can i take this Lien clearance statement along with my current Car title to border. OR i should again apply for a Clean Car title?

i am not an expert. i would suggest calling the the border office, the export agency and the RIV to see what the requirements are.

rhcohen2014,

Thanks. I confirmed that i need to get a Lien Release document from Car Finance which i will be getting soon. Hope this works..

One more Question : I just realized that US Customs Office at Detroit is open on Weekdays till 4 PM Eastern which means i need to coordinate my driving time to ensure i will be there in US Export Customs before that time.

Quick Question - Is Canadian side of the process i.e., CBSA has any time limit or it is open for 24*7..!!

Regards
Shiva

each office has different hours. again, i would recommend calling the specific border office you will be dealing with. unlike the us, on the canadian side, it will be taken care of by the officers that handle declarations, so they probably have longer hours than the US side.

rhcohen2014,

Thanks for your reply.

Wanted to know if you did EIN and ITN by yourself or through any other exporter site.

Since iam driving by my own car, i went to IRS site to get my EIN and i don't see any option to select for Individual filing for EIN. All that i see here is for Corporations filing EIN.

Appreciate your help with information on EIN and ITN creation..

correct, there is no option for idividual filing of a EIN yet. for "company/corporation name", you just put your full name.

I was lucky to have someone in my family in the shipping business, so i didn't have to look for a broker.

unless the jewelry is worth thousands of dollars , then i don't think ti's necessary to have it appraised. wedding jewelry that is being worn does not need to be declared on a b4 form. when i declared my jewelry on my b4, i declared it as a 'lot', and gave it a total value. i did not provide any photos, all i did was list "box of jewelry" and assigned a value. most of my jewelry is costume and not worth thousands of dollars.

There is no need for a professional appraisal. Just take individual photos of each item so that they can be stamped during your landing formalities. Include descriptions of these items on your B4 form and you will be fine.
