Can anyone point me to the right direction? I live in Ontario. I just landed last week and paid RIV fee online. I have a vehicle import form (form1) from landing process.

What to do now?? My vehicle still have a US registration plate and insured by the US company. How do I go to switch everything to Canadian (registration plate and insurance) smoothly without a gap?

Any input appreciated!

You need to take your car and the paperwork from RIV to a registered inspection place to have the car inspected. They will give you more paperwork that you will take to the province to get the car registered. RIV.com will have a list of places near you that can do the inspection.

Thanks Heatherusa~

'The paperwork from RIV' means form 1? or will I get something else in the mail soon? The reason for asking this is that the paper I got at landing said if I put e-mail when I paid RIV fee online they will send form 2 in 5 business days...I am really confused what this means. Wish they would have explained better.

Did you read the instructions at www.riv.ca?

I paid my fees online and got an email letter that I had to take to the inspection place. From there they did the inspection and gave me another form to take to the registrar in Alberta. They logged the paperwork that I got for federal inspection and gave me a provincial inspection form that I then had to take to an inspection place and get another inspection for the province.

I cant remember now but I believe the email letter tells you that you have 45 days (?) to get the inspection and all other information.

Good luck

thanks~~I just got an e-mail from them today about inspection. As it turns out my vehicle did not have any recalls on it. However, I managed to get them to print out the proof. :P It is so weird though the RIV site said to fax or e-mail the recall certificate or they won't issue the form2 (inspection form) but they do that anyway!
I guess my next step is to get the daytime running lights on..I don't think my vehicle has them. Thanks for info...i will update later on what happens next so maybe someone will find it helpful in the future.

DRL install costs vary widely, so check around. I got mine done for $80. If you're in Toronto and want the name of the place that did mine, let me know.

This is a lot of hassle to go through!! I am planning on bringing my car with me when I immigrate as well and was curious if I would have trouble because my car is cosigned by my dad so he technically co-owns it with me, though he has not once been behind the wheel of the car. I couldn't find the form you are talking about on the site but I guess I would just have him sign saying that he is okay with mine taking the car into Canada?

Is your dad a co-signer on the loan or a co-owner of the vehicle? If he co-owns, then the easiest thing to do might be to have him sign it over to you so the title is solely in your name. If he is co-signer on the note, you will probably have to get his written permission AND the bank's permission in order to import it to Canada.
