Hi everybody,

I was sponsored a long time ago by my wife, our question is very simple:
Since I'm studying right now, so financial stability is kind of a challenge, and my wife left a job few months ago and we are kinda standing on an edge or going towards it.

My wife (the sponsor) considered going on welfare, now there is this law or something that says she is financially responsible for me for 3 years after i became a permanent resident and we are still within this period.

Since this case is kinda opposite; she is the one who wanna go on welfare until she finds a new job. How does it work? Is she eligible? If she goes on welfare does it affect anything? Will it be debt on her?

Thank you!

Actually that's not quite right. If someone is married, they don't really go on welfare alone, they are considered as a spousal unit. Based on what we've seen on this forum, if either applies for welfare, the government will come after them to pay it back if it's within three years of the applicant landing.

I am sorry I screwed up there was a thread where a sponsor wanted to divorce her husband to go on welfare but stay together

So if she goes on welfare it's like we are going on welfare together because we are married?
The point here is to deal with some financial difficulties successfully. This is not a care of divorce and application going on welfare (dunno what kind of human being does such thing).
We are a loving couple who is facing a financial challenge due to school tuition and life expenses.

The problem is that everyone says something else and we don't know where to ask anymore. She has never been on welfare or any gov assistance program. We both try our best on building a future and i can easily work full time but it means i have to give up education, which is the base for a better future. My wife finds it hard to work because she has a documented disability (anxiety of crowded places) so whenever she finds a job she ends up being fired, like what happened with the last job. We asked friends and they told us she can't claim disability because of the 3 year period but she can claim welfare. Now you guys say she can't. I'm sure if i ask someone else i'll hear a different answer.

She's can apply for disability and get a Dr's note because it's not consider welfare I can be wrong or unemployment is ok because they take out money from her checks ei I suggest your wife calls service canada or go to service canada office

I think we better off just rely on family till things get better.
Unemployment wouldn't be enough since she didn't work full time or many hours

Ive personally seen a few people here having to repay welfare if one person out of a married couple applied for it. So yes definitely I wouldnt go the welfare route at this point.

Have you tried getting her to apply for jobs that dont involve large crowds?

That's what we are doing right now lol. She likes working as a nanny, we are reviewing all possibilities because working makes you more effective and healthy than money that comes easily. We were always against the idea of welfare and still are, especially when there is so many refugees on welfare. Welfare is money that the country will get back in the future through taxes, so if it's not us, our kids will have to pay for it, that's why we are against it by all means, unless it helps someone who is really in need like a refugee, which we are not.
