To everyone waiting, hang in there. The immigration journey is the toughest thing I have ever been through but with my husband here with me almost 6 months now, I can't believe how far away that agony of wondering when and waiting for word from Kingston seems. Soon it will be a distant memory for everyone.
Others have written about the landing experience and I echo everything they say. But for the newbies, I can tell you the first 6 months is not all roses. For us, we had a lot to deal with because of a lost COPR (which prevented him from working for the first three months of his arrival) and a tragic death in his family that forced us to make an emergency trip to Jamaica. What this showed me though is that homesickness is a true illness and can be quite debilitating for your family. I see such a difference in my husband now that he has a job and his own friends and his own sense of being. It was awesome to come home Sunday to a backyard full of guys building a new deck for our house! It has also made the world of difference that he takes Sunday to call his family back home. He talks for hours sometimes - which is not great for our phone bill but fabulous for his well-being and our marriage. Don't try and make him Canadian but try and incorporate Canada into his life while still keeping Jamaica in his heart. I have become an excellent jerk chicken maker and even cooked some killer festival the other night so the small things do matter to show that you aren't trying to change the person that he was. Although some of the Jamaican habits are hella annoying!
It will be fabulous and it has been for us but be prepared for the bumps. And the fights. Jamaicans can fight and we have had some killer ones - mostly over home renovations and money. Be prepared to compromise, hold your tongue and love your significant other no matter what. And then at the 5-6 month mark it should be all settled down and you will realize how amazing your life is and how worth it the immigration journey (and fights) has been. At least that is my hope ;D
Good luck everyone!
