My daughter is under 18 is a Canadian citizen, my son is 20 and is PR. Both are in their first year of university. I am a an international student. How can I get PR or citizenship as their father who sponsored them has moved to another country and does not give any financial support.

Through Express Entry or PNP. Drastic cuts to immigration. Your children can sponsor you through a competitive lottery which hasn’t been open since 2020 once they are working and meet LICO for the number of people in the family.

Thanks for your reply. I will research those avenues, however they just started university fulltime and are not working ( LICO).

So focus on your PR as they would need to finish school, meet LICO for at least 3 years, and be selected in the lottery. With current numbers for PGP (around 20k), and probably half a million wanting to submit a profile don’t rely on the lottery.

As always noted you will have to attempt to get PR on your own which may be almost impossible. Given your children are adults may be tough to justidy that they need to have a parent in Canada after your studies. As previously noted you’re looking at 5+ year before your children even qualify to try to sponsor you but may never be able to sponsor you. When did you come to Canada? Was it to study? You need to have a plan b if you have to return home.

In that case you need to focus on qualifying and applying for PR yourself through an economic immigration program. Most likely this will involve finishing your program in Canada and getting at least one year of Canadian work experience to score enough points. Start learning French now if you don't already know French.

Learn French and get trained and work in a field where there is a critical labour shortage because I assume OP is at least in their 40s. So many more people are learning French to get PR so assume those scores will also increase. At 40+ it is tough to immigrate in most situations.
