Any idea with this? I am a June 21 applicant and have been in BGC since last year. Yesterday I got an update that “background verification is in progress” is this just a ghost update?

Is this on the Tracker? It might mean you've entered the comprehensive background check. You can order GCMS notes to be sure.

1) Can I do anything on my end (for example, reach out to anyone, call etc.) to get an accurate status update or speed up the process?
2) My work permit expires in Aug 2025. Should I apply for an extension?

If your background check is still in progress, there's not really anything you can do but wait.
You should apply to extend your work permit before it expires. It's likely you will need to apply to extend it, given how long virtual landings are taking; even if you received P1 tomorrow, it would take 2-3 months to get eCoPR, so you might not have it in time for your WP expiry. I have seen 1 month before expiry recommended as the time to apply for an extension.
