It depends on which Airline you travel by. For example if you travel by British airways, you can spend 48 hours in London without paying anything extra. If you're travelling by Singapore Airline, you can spend 48 hours in Singapore. And so on. Some airlines let you spend 48 hours and some less or more. You got to talk to the airline and find that out. some airlines also arrange for a transit visa free of cost so you can go around the city.
