Joint US / Canada citizens - living in the US - income tax treaty

We are both joint Canadian and US citizens currently resident in Ontario.

We are considering living in the US for a few years before returning. Do we have to pay capital gains disposition (i.e. non-resident)- or is there a way to defer until we return to Canada.
