Hello everyone,
We finally received copr today with validity till November 2020. The next step is to find jobs. We were sponsored by Saskatchewan province so we will be heading to Saskatoon if everything works out.
Following are our profiles:
1. Self: I am a registered P.Eng. in BC and Saskatchewan + PMP certification. 17+ years experience in civil, structural in USA. MS + MBA from US universities. I have a design/drafting startup on the side that will have some clients in USA. I am looking for jobs in structural/civil/transportation arena with intention to start my own business in few years. Now if I can only get used to the Metric system that I gave up when I came to USA 17 years ago :)
2. Spouse: Phd. in chemistry from USA top school + pharma experience for 4 years. She is not currently working for last 3 years but fully intends to work in Canada.
I will really appreciate if others can chime in on job prospects for us. I had few recruiters in the area reach out to me already. I am also attending an conference in Saskatoon end of May to develop networks in my field. Any other ideas to improve our chances? I found that using an address in Canada helps in getting calls from the recruiters. I have rented a UPS box for my PR card delivery in Saskatoon.

We are doing our soft landing in early March through Buffalo, NY.
Thanks !

CIC usually doesn’t usually deliver PR cards to P.O. Boxes. What area does your wife specialize in in Chemistry? How much work experience does she have. Canada has been losing their pharma industry over time. Not sure what is left in Montreal and there is some in Toronto. Civil engineering is a competitive area. If you have a masters from a decent university that will be very helpful. Setting up your own engineering form will likely be difficult. You will definitely need to build up a reputation in the industry and beat out the existing firms. Have you been to Saskatchewan? I don’t think either of your profiles are best suited for the area. You actually make get better opportunities out of Toronto but your wife may be get better opportunities in a large city like Toronto. Hard to really comment without knowing what kind of Chemistry she specialized in. Has she published a lot? Taught?

The UPX box address is not a PO box, it looks like a real address. Lot of people on this forum have said that they successfully ordered their PR cards using the po box. I will let everyone know my experience.

My wife has 4 years of experience as post-doctoral research fellow with expertise in pre-formulation of APIs including identification and selection of polymorphs, salts, solvates, hydrates, co-crystals.She has published extensively and has teaching experience of 6 years.
I realize that it will take some years to get established in my area but I work in a niche industry. I know lot of players in US and Canada and have helped them in the past in different capacities. However, I do agree with you about moving closer to Toronto or Vancouver to increase our chances.
Having said that, I want to put 100% effort to find opportunities in the province that sponsored me before I decide to give up and move.

If it doesn’t say PO Box yes your chances are better. With your wife’s qualifications she really needs to be searching for a position globally and not limiting herself to Canada. Getting an academia spot or in one of the advanced labs really comes down to timing and whether a spot comes up. There aren’t tons of jobs that meet her skills across Canada.
