Job Offer Received but need help on Legitimacy

Hi Everyone,

I hope you guys can help me. I was able to get a Job offer from a company in Alberta. They emailed me like a roughdraft of the contract. Not actually an official contract. The company's rules and guidelines state that I shoulder the work permit/visa processing fees costing CAD$550. I have to send it to the lawyer in Canada through money transfer along with the Employment Application Form.

On approval they will send me the approval and a copy to the Canadian embassy in my country of resident (Philippines) and upon receive by the embassy they will call me for my work visa collection.

I don't know if this is how it goes. My understanding is that the company sends me the approved Job offer and I apply from here and have the application fees paid here in the Philippines. I am actually lost and don't know whether I should pay the CAD$550. I found the company online.

Can anyone please help me. This is my first time and I hope to God I don't get victimized by a scam.

If you were never interviewed or applied for the job, I would probably keep my money in my pocket. Since a work permit fee is $150.00 (and you would have to pay it in Manila) and there is no cost for an employer to apply for an LMO, so guess where the $550 is going?

They responded this message.

"The immigration lawyer charge $550 for their process, they process and make sure your work permit is granted to you."

I had to send my complete CV to them. I'm sorry for the confusion. I did apply for the job. 3 of my other friends applied before me so they had me tag along.

Is there anyway to know if it is a scam?

like the other poster said, it's only 150 for the work permit and you apply in your own country, not in canada. in order to apply they need to give you your contract signed by the boss and in your name, plus have a labour market opinion approving the job to an immigrant.

The company reasoned out that their immigration lawyer does the visa processing for the company. This was their explanation upon sending them the receipt of CAD$550 and the Employment Application Form.

"Your documents must be process with our immigration lawyer and on approval they will send your approval to you and a copy to the Canadian embassy in your country of resident and upon receive by the embassy they will call you for your work visa collection."

Is it possible that the immigration lawyer of the company pays at his end in Canada and forward it to the Embassy here in the Philippines, or is the CAD$550 the fee for the immigration lawyer only?

Gosh My head is spinning....haha...I have not decided yet on whether I should pay.

no companies does that, even when they go through a liaison here in canada, the liaison gets the work permit applied to the country where the person is hired from, and companies don't pay for that, its funded by the government, that is why it don't sound right. can they send you proof of this or even like other companies often do, deduct it off through payroll, since you will be working for them, how come they don't just take that fund from what they will pay you when you come work for them?

They have packages offered like airfare, accomodation and other benefits. What I am thinking is that the CAD$550 is for the service of their immigration lawyer who will process the job offer and get it approved or something. I frankly don't know. Besides that I think I'll be paying for the work permit at the embassy here and as well as the medical. They said "Our company well knows company here in Calgary; we respect our dignity and Pride as well respect all our entire staff. Ifyou are really serious and want to join our company you must abide and comply to the company rules guidelines to enable a successful result of your application." So I guess that is part of their deal. They will provide the accomodation, airfare and other benefits, while I shuld shoulder the CAD550 and I guess the work permit and the medical.

1. Well it appears you are determined to kiss you $550 good bye.
2. At least publish the name of the company or do a google search on it. Check Canada 411 and cross check the address to see if they are actually at the address where they claim to be.
3. Agencies cannot charge the employee for the cost of arranging the job in Alberta.

This is nothing more than a SCAM - why on earth do you want to lose $550 or more?

That is a SCAM. Don't wire them any money. They should send you the job offer, a copy of the contract you signed and a positive labour market opinion then you apply and pay directly to the Canadian Embassy in Manila.

"why on earth do you want to lose $550 or more?" - Baloo

I guess the reason why is that hardworking people like me and many more out there who strive to get that opportunity to prove my worth would be willing to take that chance just for the sake of having a better future.

Is it so bad to look for a better life? Nurses here in the Philippines would even pay hospitals just to be a volunteer nurse and in the end they get heart broken because they don't get absorbed by the hospital. You may wonder why and that is because here connection is about everything. You may not be that competitive or even have the credentials but if you know people from the inside, it is a done deal. It would be so unfortunate for those who has nothing to offer but their skills and their perseverance in their line of work.

Its really sad that people out there take advantage of those who just want to have a good start and want to have a good future for their family. I for one am just wanting that small percentage to be given that chance to prove that I can be the best in what I do. What's even sadder is that people take advantage of those who are vulnerable for the sake of having a better future. Everything is a risk when it comes to getting your dreams but I didn't expect it to be this heartbreaking. I was so hopeful and I guess I am still in denial that this is a scam but what can I do, everything points to the wrong direction. Those who responded to this, thank you so much for your help. I owe it to you guys and thank you for having me avoid another dissappointment. For those out there who are in search for job opportunities in canada please check it carefully. Below are the details to the company I was about to work for.

The telephone number they gave you is for Sioux City, Nebraska, not Calgary, Alberta. Stone Petroleum LIMITED is located at a different address is Calgary. Stone Petroleum Corporation Company does not exist except for on a bunch of websites offering jobs that are trying to lure unsuspecting people like you who are eager to have a better life.

I found a profile for their HR manager and it's laughable. See http://www.brijj.com/jennifer-pritchard

She's worked for the company for 47 years? I don't think so.

The address provided is actually for Rustler Petroleum Inc. http://www.rustler.ca/

The last part of their website address, webs.com, is a site that offers free website templates to build your own website. See www.webs.com

I don't think you need more proof. Don't send them your money. Oh, and just so you know, no company can compel you to use any lawyer, consultant or representative to apply for immigration to Canada. That's illegal. It is always your choice to hire a representative or not.

You are right that it is completely ok to look for a better life. And you are wise to check things out. Keep trying. You will find a legitimate opportunity but stay cautious. Best of luck.

habahaba_chixnax You are 100% right to look for a better life.
Those who are really driven to take the chance are clear targets for these companies.

If any company or person asks for money to provide a job/immigration in Canada, it is a red flag.
As rjessome has said, you choose a representative if you want one, the company cannot force it on you.

Be happy that you are not losing money, there was never a job (with this company) to lose anyway.

Be inspired that you did think something was wrong, you mentioned scam in your post here.

Stay strong.

Thank you guys for enlightening me. If by any chance you know of any website I can search for jobs or legitimate companies that cater to international nurses, please feel free to help me out and in the long run, I will return the favor. On my part, I don't have a financial problem but of course, money is still money...lol.. Thanks so much....
