A question to forum members: I am going to apply for Citizenship next month but need to go back to my home country for 3 weeks end of next month after I apply. Would there be any condition not to leave Canada after applying for Citizenship. I found below thing in CiC web site

"Intent to reside
You must declare your intent to reside during the citizenship application process.

To become a citizen, you must indicate your intention to:

live in Canada,
work outside Canada as a Crown servant, or
live abroad with certain family members who are Crown servants.
Once you become a Canadian citizen, you have the right to enter, remain in, or leave Canada, one of the basic rights of citizenship."

But whereas in the application form consent is something different for:

"I Intend, if granted citizenship

to continue to reside in Canada
to enter or continue in ...blah blah blah
to reside with my spouse...blah blah blah..."

There's a difference in the statement. Since I bought my tickets for the trip shall wait to apply after my return or I can apply now and visit my country for 3 weeks without any issue in future?

Please advise.

Go ahead and apply. Three weeks vacation is ok. Don't delay your citizenship process.

Hi Raj_Hoque

Nothing to worry, below explains your concerns...

Can I leave Canada after I mail my citizenship application?

Yes. There is not a requirement to stay in Canada while we process your application. Please also note that if you applied on or after June 11, 2015, you must also declare your intent to reside in Canada in order to be eligible.

If you need to leave Canada there are several risks you should be aware of.

If you leave Canada, you must continue to meet your residency obligation to keep permanent resident (PR) status. You must be a permanent resident to become a citizen and not just when you apply. If you lose PR status before you take the Oath of Citizenship, you cannot become a citizen. Bring your PR card with you when you leave Canada so you can return easily. Make sure the card will not expire while you are outside Canada. (If your PR card expires, it does not mean you have lost PR status.)

We generally only mail letters, notices and other material to addresses in Canada, although in some cases, you will receive an e-mail from us. You must reply to these letters within a certain amount of time. If you do not reply within the timeframe and do not provide an acceptable reason for not being able to keep your appointment with us, we will close your application.

You must attend appointments and other events at our offices, like your citizenship test, interview and ceremony. These events only take place in Canada. If you cannot attend the appointment or event, you must write a letter of explanation to the local office that sent you the event notice. You may also send this letter using this Web form.

I would be careful. The rules state that if you want to leave for more than 2 weeks you need to inform CIC. I think they mentioned that because there will be some correspondence and they will need to know if you are away. Up to you if you want to leave and apply as well.

Keep in mind that they might ask you (within the month) about other stuff (Errors, documents re-submission...etc). See the notes section in the sheet where people got their applications returned for some issues. So if you are not physically here, and you don't tell them, they will be doubtful, and you don't want that.

You need to be 100% sure that your application is accurate, hopefully no one gets back to you at all with issues... Wish you the best

Here is what is mentioned on the CIC website

"Asking questions about your application
While we process your application, you should only contact us if:

you change your address,
you plan to leave Canada for more than two weeks in a row,
you are charged with a crime or
we do not contact you about your file within the posted processing times"

Hi Mzoubi,

Thanks for your concern. Could you please guide me the reference link where it is written "The rules state that if you want to leave for more than 2 weeks you need to inform CIC." I would like to consider all kind of options before I apply and leave. Also even if I leave I will have my relatives staying at my home to receive any letter and email is there always with me...feed me more please.

That make sense Mzoubi. Thanks a lot. Could you please tell me where shall I notify them about my vacation or going away? I shall be away for 24 days in a row...so I better let them know but I need an address or email to inform them. Can anyone help?
