I just got an email from cicnews.com with updates on all things Canadian immigration. I am wondering if this article is the reason why processing times are so slow. It started Dec 1. Isn't that about the time things slowed down?

It very well might be. The timing matches, but I hope resources aren't being taken away from stage 1 processing, to keep the supervisa's processing time at the promised 8 weeks.

As much as I have sympathy with parents waiting to be joining their adult children, I can't help to wonder who should be reunited with their families faster: spouse, partners, and kids, or parents and grandparents applying for supervisa.

90 days is really long for stage 1.

I was surprised David Cohen didn't address the long processing time for Step 1 in his newsletter/email. Not even in the Q&A. I really want to KNOW the reason!

I just looked at the last 3 spreadsheets and wow - February has it the WORST so far!! Big time!! It only got up to 59 days in December. Then went back down in the beginning of January and then back up. But all of February got screwed! And February people are still waiting and March people are getting approvals!

I was thinking about the same issue today. I have seen a few people in March get approved, but there are still people in February waiting for their approvals. The only theory I could come up with was that maybe they are now distributing the files between different offices (e.g Miss and Ott.) and one of them happens to be faster than the other for some reason.

But like I said, this is only a theory and nothing more :-\

When I check their web site about the processing times, I only focus on Working on applications received on ........, 2012 sentence. This is always correct. And now they are working on February 15, 2012 applications.

I don't care about the "days" part. It's usually not correct and not updated. It only shows the average waiting time.

At the moment if someone submitted their application before February 15th then you have to worry and call them, otherwise the phone agents can't help our situation.

I always look at the bright side and know that they are really worse cases, such as parents sponsorship and skill workes waiting times, such as 4-5-6 years. It's really horrible!

On the other hand CIC really need to update their offices and their staff for better processing. Technology is everywhere, in 30 seconds you send money from one side of the world to another, you pay 12 dollars and in 30 seconds you get someone's driving record for hiring him; but one sponsorship approval takes 90-100 days and we pay 1000 dollars package fee for that. :( It's totally rip off.

The processing times haven't really even been accurate for some time. I would speculate that the apps being sent up to Ottawa aren't included in the processing time because for the last while there has consistently been a bunch of people dated slightly after the processing date who are still waiting and who suddenly start processing when the date moves along, which does suggest the date is roughly accurate, but then somehow also a bunch of people who submitted long after the processing date getting their approvals much more quickly.

It sounds like they just grab batches of apps and send them up to Ottawa, and they're not necessarily the apps that are next in line. In fairness to them, I can't think of a more practical way to do it but it sucks to see people who submitted after you getting their approval before you, and you can see over and over the way this puts some people in a panic about the state of their app.

But to address the thread topic specifically, it wouldn't surprise me if they're diverting resources to the supervisas. Obviously this is a new thing and it's important that it be seen as a success, so that people will be encouraged to apply down that route and then less inclined to wait for sponsorship to reopen.

To be totally honest, without wanting to upset or panic anybody as this is just my opinion and gut feeling, I think the decision to suspend parent and grandparent sponsorship is political/ideological and they probably won't bring it back. I think they'll point to the success of the supervisa and say "hey, this seems to be working out well, let's just keep it" and will pretend that wasn't the plan all along. Making sure that it has great processing times has to be part of that.

I have been checking the status of applications from December 2011 and it's really been going downhill. I thought the goal of this was to re-unite families as quick as possible but it seems to be going the other way.

So the question remains, will we ever know why the long wait? (the real reason) and will it get better any time soon. I have looked all over the internet for answers but nothing definite as of yet.

Just continue to wait patiently :( and hope for the best!

Thankfully step 2 isn't affected. So it's really just an extra two months. Long when you're waiting but overall it's not that much time. At least that's what I tell myself. Thankfully I can be with my husband during the wait. I feel for those who are separated. I know two extra months apart is rough.
