Hi all,

I applied for permanent residency within Canada in November 2011.
I have been on a work permit (multiple ones) since I moved to Canada in Jan 2010.
I will now have my landing interview on November 22.
I have been reading contracting posts about getting a SIN number.
Basically, here's my issue.
I got an offer for the job of my dreams. This job is supposed to start on November
26th (they need me asap).
I thought it would be fine because I had heard that I cant get my SIN on the
same day as my landing interview with my confirmation of Permanent Residency.
I have now read that if I applied inland, I need to wait for the PR card to get a new
SIN. My current SIN starts with a 9. Could I work for a new employer with my
current SIN and the COPR ? or do I need a new SIN ?

Is there no way I can get a new SIN with my COPR ?? Why would I have to wait and
people coming from abroad do not ?

Please help me I am panicking now.

Thanks,

If its the job of your dreams, could you volunteer for that position till you get your sin number? You can get your sin number on the very day you get your PR card.

From what I understand they give you your permanent SIN at the interview.... I have spoken with someone who had his landing interview last month and he was given his SIN as he left... you could always call your local office and ask them. Good Luck!

Edited to add: according to Service Canada...
Permanent residents

You must submit one of the following primary documents:

Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This is the only acceptable document if your claim was processed in Canada.

Confirmation of Permanent Residence AND visa counterfoil affixed to a foreign passport or a travel document

Confirmation of Permanent Residence AND foreign passport for visa exempt countries

Record of Landing issued before June 28, 2002.

Verification of landing. This document is provided when an original of the Record of Landing or the Confirmation of Permanent Residence is not available (i.e. lost, misplaced, etc.).

Status Verification, also known as "Verification of Status", is considered an acceptable document to support the client's status in Canada when applying for a replacement SIN card or updating the SIN record.
So there are several ways to get your SIN you DO NOT have to have the PR card by itself.... sp if they don't do it at the interview you can leave the interview and go right to Service Canada and get it again Good Luck!

As I said, I already have a SIN, it just starts with a 9. I just wonder if it's a problem to keep working with it in case they don't give me my new SIN.
No way to volunteer for it, it's HUGE consulting firm

Do you know where this person was from ?
I am from France, visa exempt country, and I was told that people who are from visa exempt countries can get their new SIN on the same day. I have, however, heard of people that didn't get it.
When I called service Canada they said I would get it because I'm from a visa exempt country. Unfortunately, it has happened that these people tell me things on the phone that turn out to be wrong

Under PR Card, it says:
Permanent Resident Card issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This is the only acceptable document if your claim was processed in Canada.

(highlight is mine).

But if you can get the SIN during the landing interview, that would be great!

I have read this already. I do know.
However, I was told that if you are from a visa exempt country, you can get it without the PR card.
When I called service canada, they said the same. But as I mentioned, these people are not always right.
You do not every get the SIN during the landing interview, but some people got it at Service Canada on the same day.

We got our permanent SIN with the COPR (visa exempt).
If you have a valid work permit and a SIN you can work. It doesn't matter what number it starts with. I'm not sure what your issue is? Is it that your employer doesn't want to hire you because you are not a PR?

The work permit is for my current company only.
On November 22 I will have my landing interview and on November 26 I will start with a *NEW* employer, not the one on my work permit.
So basically I was wondering if
1/ I get my SIN on the same day as my landing interview
OR
2/ If I can not, I need to know if I can work for my *new* employer with the COPR and my current SIN number

Had you applied inland ?
and if you don't mind sharing, what city do you live in ?
I was told that Service Canada can be different depending on the office

Sorry, I understand your situation now. We applied outland although living in Canada throughout the process. We are in Calgary.

I know of nothing that ties your SIN to your restricted work permit. My spouse was issued her SIN originally when she had a restricted work permit. It eventually expired while she was a student but we renewed it when she started work at another company on an internship work permit. We were on implied status for the post-graduate permit when our PR came through. After she landed, we then went down to Service Canada with the COPR and passport with cancelled PR visa, and got the permanent SIN. The PR card came a month or so later. It doesn't sound like a different situation than yours. I wouldn't worry about not having a PR card if you cannot get a new SIN with the COPR. You may have to explain it to your employer if HR questions the #9 SIN but that seems a minor hurdle as you are legally entitled to work for anyone and have a completely normal and legitimate explanation.
