Is there a waiting period after stopping social assistance to sponsor?

My partner has PR and wants to sponsor me but is collecting welfare on and off for a few years. Partner is on it now.
If my partner finds a job today can my partner sponsor me immediately or is there a waiting period?
Will the fact that partner has been on welfare on and off have an impact on CIC decision since it says for spousal sponsorship there is no income cutoff?

While there is no minimum income requirement, you need to be able to show that you will be able to support yourselves in Canada without welfare. Couples can and have been refused on financial grounds when IRCC did not believe they could support themselves.

Technically, there is no minimum time to be off welfare. However, applying as soon as he stops will cause higher scrutiny of the financial situation, especially if he has been on welfare for years.

Based on experiences here, the best route seems to be to get off social assistance and start working, then wait 2-3 months before submitting the application.

Given that your partner has also been on and off welfare you need to show that he/she is committed to working and won’t just return to welfare. A longer time off of welfare and working before applying would be better but you obviously don’t want to wait 6+ months before applying after they start working full-time.
