Hi.

I was born Canada (and therefore I have Canadian citizenship), but have spent the past 20+ years in Germany. My son, almost 17, born in Germany, wants to apply for a Canadian citizenship (and presumably move there).

The one part I have problems with when filling the "Application for a Citizenship Certificate" form for my son, is my "Canadian certificate no". I cannot recognize anything that is clearly this number on my Canadian documents. I have a (outdated) Canadian passport, my social security card, and a Quebec birth certificate. I'm assuming my "social security number" is something different from a "Canadian certificate no". Is that something that is printed in passports? Is it the "No d'inscription" on my birth certificate? I checked "Canadian Certificate of Identity" on wikipedia, and it does not seem to apply to me, so idk where/how to get this "Canadian certificate no", or if it's even a "required" field in the form.

The certificate number it is asking for is your citizenship certificate number if applicable. Because your proof of Canadian citizenship is your Quebec birth certificate, not a citizenship certificate (normally issued to people born outside of Canada), you can simply enter N/A in that section.

Note that if your Quebec birth certificate was issued before 1994, you will need to get an updated birth certificate from the province. See here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/australia-australie/consular_services_consulaires/certificates-certificats_qc.aspx?lang=eng

Also, any certificates you send with the application will not be returned. If you prefer to send certified copies instead, look here: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/germany-allemagne/consular_services_consulaires/legal-juridique.aspx?lang=eng
