Due to my extreme infatuation with Canada, after my 18th birthday I will be moving out of my moms place in North Carolina and moving back to the Great White North in January. Luckily my PR card is good until may 2017 so if I act quick upon arrival my card should be renewed in a timely fashion. Im almost positive I meet all the RO obligations seeing as I haven't lived in the states for more than a year and few months so I don't see any foreseeable reasons why I'd get turned down. My question is if its really necessary to renew my card? I plan to stay in Canada once arrival and I've been told you should have a valid card if you travel often. Maybe I should get it renewed if a future employer ask for proof of it but I just don't know if it's worth all the trouble seeing as I really don't plan on leaving the country unless necessary. I've also been told that you dont lose PR status even if your card expires so should I just let it expire or get it renewed?

As you said that you meet the RO, you can come in January and then apply for renew of PR card. It takes few months to get the replacement PR card. PR card is required in order to re-enter canada once you leave canada. So, ideally you should renew your PR card if you want to travel outside Canada.

If you meet the RO, why would you not want to renew your PR card? There are instances where you will be asked for it and if that happens, it's better that you have one already rather than have to wait 2 months for the renewal.

Thanks guys! Most deffs will work on a renewal!
It takes so long to get it renewed it is very difficult if you need to get it quickly and getting Return Res Permits (or whatever they are called today) are a hassle. Say for any reason - friend's wedding, awesome party, some emergency - you have to return to the states at the last minute. It's just way easier if you have a current card.
