Coming to getting fired people do exaggerate, they will not tell the other side of story. Even in case of firing principle of natural justice is to be followed. Written notices are required to be given otherwise the employer can be in trouble and may have to pay heavy damages. In the hiring contract there are some conditions stating that one can be fired on the violation of those conditions without further notice like violence at workplace. In such circumstance NO notice is required.
As far as coming late to work, definitely written notice is given. I will say 2-3 notices are given. The validity of these notices are anywhere from 6-12 months. After that fresh notice is to be given on coming late. I also got few in 2011 and I am still continuing. ;D
I do agree that there is no permanent job in North America, so keep looking. If the employer do not want you, it is better you move forward. There are some people who work 1-2 years at one position and move on. So time to move on and do not think much about permanent or not so permanent job.
