is it worthwhile hiring a lawyer or paralegal for common-law sponsorship?

No, not unless you have a complex case, or maybe you have a lot of money to burn and you just cant be bothered or have the time to do it yourself.

Lawyers are generally a bad idea, as all the forms can be filled out by yourself. Lawyers don't speed up the process, are expensive, and there are times they even forget to send in a document, causing delays and possibly interview.

Unless you have criminality or other serious issues, lawyers/consultants are usually a big waste of money. All forms can be filled out yourselves with any questions being answered by contributing members to this forum.

Not to mention there are countless stories on this forum of lawyers/consultants giving flat out wrong or bad advice and causing unnecessary delays and problems.

You have to provide all information to lawyer because he/she doesn't know without your telling. Why bother if you can fill out yourself especially it is not difficult at all?

Good luck!

it depends on your personality type. If you are more of a nervous type, don't like bureauocrats, sensitive, then I HIGHLY suggest hiring a consultant or lawyer.

I could never have gone through the nightmare without them.

$4000.00 is not a lot of money to spend considering the bigger picture.

+1.

Just make sure you hire a good one. My company's lawyers did all the work for my work permit(s) and PR. They did such a good job that I was totally oblivious of the process and next thing I knew, I was a PR. They told me what to do, where to go and where to sign. I realized how little I knew when it came time to sponsor my wife (which i did on my own) and I was so clueless when I started! I had no idea how things worked even though I myself became a PR. Looking back, I'd still do it on my own because the fees my company paid were too much IMHO for a straightforward case. I did stress about it a lot but it was worth it because of what I learned.

I suggest you should read CIC website about family class sponsorship first. Then start to fill out forms.
You also can come back here to ask questions. There are a lot of knowledgable people here who are better than some lawyers. But it is the very necessary step to read CIC first.
