Is it worth my applying?

My family and I live in Australia and are hoping to make the move to Canada with our two boys. In particular we have fallen in love with Toronto and the surrounding areas.

We were originally going to apply as my wife being the primary applicant, but the company that she works for will not be able to guarantee her a management position so thus the position she will be guaranteed falls into Category C (she works in the tourism industry). So that means that we would have to apply as myself being the primary applicant but whereas I have 15 years managerial experience within my field (I work in the graphic arts/printing industry) it is not on the list of required professions.

So, is it worth our applying?

We, as a family, are very keen to make the move. We have studied Canadian history, know the national anthem by heart, have visited there, love the people and culture, talk about it constantly, I even listen to one of the local radio stations in Toronto while I work (go Q107 :) ).

Ironically, when we make the move I was going to study at the George Brown Chef School and become a chef (which I see is on the list of required occupations).

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Warm regards,

Steve :)

If your wifes job offer is not skilled and your job is not on the list of 38, there is no point in applying because you will not be accepted. If you or your wife can manage to get a certified skilled job offer (AEO), you can apply.

No one can answer this question except the Minister of immigration. But my guess is, due to the present global economic crisis, probably there will be. It my guess. feel free to guess as well.

Nuff respect!!!

I am sure the list will change at some point since the needs will change over the years but this list was only published 4 months ago so I am sure they are not about to change it soon.

Well I don't mind waiting. After all, I have waited twenty years to apply - what do a couple more years matter?

One way or another I'll get there :)

I guess you could apply to the chef school and go on a student visa. On a student visa, you can take your wife with you on an open work permit and your kids come too, no problem. After a year in Canada, you and your wife can apply for permanent residency under the federal skilled worker program as category 3, that is people who've been in Canada for a year. Sounds better? :)

That is an excellent idea Leon.

I have already been in touch with the George Brown Chef School and they are very helpful. I may have missed this years intake but, again, I don't mind waiting till the next one. As I was just saying to someone about this - "The harder the journey, the more you appreciate the destination".

I will get there one day :)
