I will be doing a short landing soon and plan to have a friend send me the PR card by mailing it internationally. I read somewhere that "if the PR card is detected in the mail (they come with RFID on them these days I believe) during customs it will be sent back to the CIC."

How much of this is true?

I'm wondering if I should travel back to Canada later (after about 2 months) by applying for a PRTD. Is it a simple procedure to obtain a PRTD? That way, I will be able to collect it from my friend in person when I visit the next time.

In the light of the updated features (like unique RFID tag) on the PR cards

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/notices/2015-11-25.asp

What is the consensus here on the group regarding this issue of sending the cards across border via post.

Anyone having good/bad experience lately?

Regards

Truth is things get lost in the mail from time to time so there's always that risk. But I've mailed my international passport to different countries on several occasions.... with no problem. DHL OR FEDEX. I'm guessing a PR card should fall in that category. Although to b honest,i think a last passport is easier to replace than a card.

people here seem to be overthinking this. It is not illegal to mail a PR card anywhere given isnt that how a card is distributed in the first place via mail and at renewal albeit within the country. As previous poster said replacing a lost card could be troublesome but that is the risk you take even if in country things get lost.

As for the RFID chip if you read the link this is currently aimed at land border crossings specifically to aid CBSA processing vehicle occupants.

Maybe in future it might be of some benefit to scan PR cards as well as passports when people leave and reenter the country as backup to RO but for now no point in overthinking what ' big brother' processes may or may not exist especially when comes to mail exiting the country. Custioms are more focused on stopping stuff coming in.

Thanks for replying guys.

Loosing a mail is a risk associated with every mail. And as rightly said, it could get lost within the country too, or from your pocket.

Anyhow, why does everyone recommend DHL, UPS, FedEx only, and why not Canada Xpresspost for USA. I wanted to go with the latter.
