Is it possible to reside outside of my university's state/province?

Hello,

I am a newly admitted student at Concordia Montreal Quebec for Winter 2021. I have applied for my study permit one week ago.
I have a friend in Calgary, AB that I plan to settle with, since my Winter semester at Concordia will be online, and I have a 7-hour timezone difference in my country and a very slow internet connection.

If I was admitted in Quebec for my study permit, can I go visit my friend in Alberta? Or is my visa restricted to Quebec only?

Once you are in Canada you can currently travel to and live in any province you want, I say currently given of course with COVID everything continues to be unpredictable and who knows whether there may be inter province travel restrictions or provincial quarantine requirements.

Others can comment but it Maybe Advisable though if you are allowed to travel to Canada to initially land and complete immigration formalities in Montreal or at least maybe transit to Montreal if that is the basis for your study permit being issued even if your winter semester will be online.

In reality you could complete immigration formalities at any first POE just no way to predict CBSA response if you have no plan to head for Montreal at least initially before heading to Calgary, plus of course quarantine on arrival may still be with us through winter.

Having said above may also be advisable to keep Concordia advised of your plan plus look into any health coverage implications being in AB as opposed to Quebec.

I guess a 2 hour time difference with maybe some early morning starts is better than 7 hours

I intend to land in Quebec to complete a 2-week quarantine. I read on the immigration website that I should have a two-week quarantine plan, so maybe I can rent some place and then travel to another province.

Would suggest emailing IRCC about your plan. You are being admitted as an international student in Quebec. The argument can easily be made that if you need to be in Canada you should be living close to your campus to make use of any on campus services and be in the same time zone. You also have been accepted as a students of Quebec so your health coverage is unlikely to cover you if you are living in Alberta. Not sure if you are planning on seeking employment but that may be an issue for the Alberta government. With limitted jobs around they will want Alberta residents or those studying in Alberta to get employment first. There may be no issue but clearly you know that this may not be 100% ok or you wouldn't be planning on landing in Montreal. Better to be safe and have something in writing when you are paying so much in tuition. If it is ok I would read the fine print of your health plan and if needed purchase medical insurance for your time in Alberta

Good point, I will email IRCC and see what they have to say about this.
Thanks!

Your TRV is only temporary, your residence is valid for the whole of Canada. If you can study online at Concordia, it's quite a smart move, one difficulty I can see is that won't Concordia oblige you to take international health insurance, you should check if that is going to cover you in Alberta.

Hello, sorry to bump an old thread. Have you emailed IRCC about this and heard back? I also have the same plan of staying at AB while my classes are online..

If someone forgot to mention, if you plan on aiming for PNP (for PR) from your province, you may lose that option.
Some provinces will make sure you studied in that province in order to be eliglible for any student stream.
Once they find out that you were living in a different province, ofcourse from employment, address, taxes paid, it may be an issue when using PNP to apply for PR.
