Is it possible to get open work permit for the spouse when outland application is in process?

Hello All,

Another query regarding spousal sponsorship program. I plan on sponsoring my spouse under the sponsorship program under Outland category (Husband is currently in India).

a. If he visits me in Canada during the process, can he apply for work permit? I have checked in other threads but couldn't find a clear answer on this. Pls suggest!

b. Should we wait until he visits and then apply under Inland category? Or start the Outland application right away? (He plans to visit me in February)

No, you can only apply for open work permit if you do the inland process. Depending on circumstances, if you apply by inland and the work permit at the same time, it takes about 4 months. It however can differ. For instance, for me, it took 10 months for the work permit due to the government having to further study my criminal history report.
