Immigration in Guatemala has had my husband's passport since January, it is now August. They haven't responded to our faxes. Is this odd? How long do they usually have a persons passport?

Some embassies request the passport early on during processing but based on the results of a search I did on Trackitt for Guatemalan processing, applicants who received passport requests were approved within two months after. I think you should send a fax request to Guatemala verifying whether or not they ever received the passport. If you tracked the shipment, include the tracking information and delivery confirmation with the fax inquiry.

Actually my lawyer has sent a fax every 30 days since May, and they haven't responded, so we have no idea what's going on.

its time for you to contact your MP and see if anything else can be done.

But one thing pops into mind, are you sure the lawyer is faxing the correct number? Or even faxing them at all? I would try to do it myself just to make sure.

I agree with plumosa - you are entitled to fax them yourself. Just be sure you include your identifying information and your file number. Who sent the passport, you or the lawyer? Was the mailing tracked??

i agree with them send the fax on your own... and dont forget all your numbers there!!

yes everything was tracked and i am sure they have recieved the passport. My MP is contacting them tomorrow, thanks for your help. Hopefully we can get something figured out soon, im getting really frustrated.

Hello!

I understand, Guatemala have my husband's papers since january, and still no news.... Actually, we might get an answer between 7-18 months.... but man it's a long time waiting!!!!!!!! Why are they so slow on giving answers....

Some countries take longer to get back to the embassies.Every country does their own thing.Even though the embassy might be in the country it is still Canada trying to get info from another country and some countries have more channels than others that the embassies have to go through to get the required info.
So maybe Mexico is a country that is a bit harder to get info from.

I had my MP contact immigration and they replied the next day! This is what they said...

Dear Ms. Jones (My MP assistant),

We have not yet received the results of the applicant's criminal record check from the RCMP. We sent subject's original fingerprints to the RCMP Civil Fingerprint Screening Services back in January, but we haven't heard back from them ever since, which is unusual as we normally receive the results in about 12 to 15 weeks.

An email asking for the results has been sent to the RCMP today. We will advise of the answer they provide.

Maybe the sponsor or the representative in Canada can do some follow up of their own by phoning or emailing the RCMP fingerprint screening office. Their email address is civilnps@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

so at least we know what the hold up is. Thanks for your help!
