Is it illegal to stay in canada after expiration of the PR card

Hi........

A theoritical question......If I stay with my family for the last year (of the 5-year period)......and then extend for another year (to fulfill the 2-year period)...and apply to renew the PR card, We will technically be staying a whole year wih an expired PR card.....Is that illegal?..Would we be deported?....What about my kids school, or possibly university admission?

No - it's not illegal. It's perfectly fine to do this. Just make sure you don't leave the country until your PR status is renewed or you could have trouble returning.

Your PR card expirey has nothing to do with your actual PR status. You are a PR until it is taken from you for a violation. You can remain in Canada as long as you want without a PR card.

I have heard about university students sometimes having a bit of a hassle because of the lack of PR card, possibly has to do with student loans. Other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.
