Is it a must to update the sin number after landing?

Hello, I am just curious that is it a must to go to service canada and update sin number after landing (can the sin number from the previous foreign work permit continue to be used)? If the sin number is not updated for a while (maybe six months or more), does it affect anything (the citizenship calculation time, filing tax)?

I am very curious about this because it seems the old sin number can work perfectly well. Is there a deadline after which the old sin number will expire and can't be used any more? And if I update the sin number, do I need to go and tell the employer, or do they know right away somehow (what if I forget to tell them, does it cause any confusion or mistake)?

Can any senior shed some light on this. Thank you.

If you are a PR, you should update your SIN to a 7 series number. As far as I know, there are tax benefits if you are a permanent resident.

Hello, sir. Thank you very much for your reply. Can I ask if I wait a few more months to update the sin number, will this affect "applying for citizenship" requirement? I was searching online, it seems it said that the physical presence starts counting from the "landing day". And it also seems many advised to update sin number as soon as landing, but there is no mention whether it has any adverse effect if it is not updated.

Maybe does the updated sin number has anything to do with future "citizenship application"? Thank you.

Maybe it could help if you tell us why you don't want to update your SIN as per requirements

Hello sir. Thank you very much for the reply. The reason is that I want to keep the current old sin number for a little longer, and my line of work is very "foreign labour intense" and all my colleagues are all foreign workers. I am also curious that is there any requirement about the deadline before which the sin number has to be updated? I have been researching for a long time and couldn't find any answer.

Thank you.

If I wait maybe several months to update it, will there be any problem or even somehow violating the law?

Based on what you have said not sure anyone really knows why you are holding back from getting a SIN applicable to a PR and not a temp worker. What do you mean by foreign labour intense and foreign workers unless your employer has something else going on ?

Your SIN is applicable to you as an individual and is your responsibility to ensure you are correctly documented as a PR not your employer or your co workers.
