In alberta,
If you have a visa valid for 6 months you can get Alberta health care, even as a visitor.
My husband got his, and a friend of mine's cousin got hers, while she is only here as a visitor.

If you call alberta health care, they say you need to show proof you are lawfully admitted to canada for 6 months at least

Thanks for that answer Holiday. I swear I had read it on the forum that visitors could receive it before but I couldn't find any of the posts.

Ya i think that's what the lady said.

But really if you think about it that doesn't make sense. If you can get a AHC even as a visitor, wouldn't so many million of american's flock over to alberta with their stamped passport?

Why does their website state http://www.health.alberta.ca/AHCIP/Q-who-is-eligible.html

An eligible resident of Alberta is a person who is:
•Legally entitled to be or to remain in Canada and makes his/her permanent home in Alberta;
•Committed to being physically present in Alberta for at least 183 days in a 12 month period (NOTE: Periods of temporary absence will be counted as being physically present in Alberta. If you are planning to be away for more than six months, contact our office.);
•Not claiming residency or obtaining benefits under a claim of residency in another province, territory or country;
Any other person deemed by the regulations to be a resident not including a tourist, transient or visitor to Alberta.

Here is part of the email i receieved from alberta health services when i inquired

When individuals first arrive in Alberta on a visitor permit and have the
intention of residing in Alberta on a permanent basis, are applying for
permanent residency and have a spouse that is a citizen or permanent
resident we can set them up at the beginning of the permit. Once the
permit has expired, we are not able to register them during implied
status. Once your spouse has received either his new visitors permit
or his permanent residency, you will be able to apply for coverage for
him.

Okay i just called AHC and confirmed and the lady says as long as I have all the letters immigration has sent me so far and a valid stamp or permit on the US passport then my wife will be eligible to get a health care number.
