Invitation from a Friend

Dear seniors and forum members,
I'm going to apply for TRV and want to make my application as strong as possible.
One of my former classmates lives in Canada, but we're not very close these days. However, I can still approach him and ask for an invitation letter.

So my question is - will such letter actually help to convince visa officer of my genuine intention to only visit as a tourist, or it won't influence the final desicion? As I don't want to bother my friend for no good reason.

I really think it's wroth the shot, if you don't have anyone else to write the latter the use your friend.
