Internship offer with a company for 8 month? chances of LMO for work permit

Hi guys,

I am new to this site. Such a great site.

I have a question - I am currently doing my masters in chemical engineering. I was fortunate to get an 8 month internship position with a top oil and gas company in alberta. The pay is really good, and ill be working in my field as a chemical engineer - working as a process engineer.
Here is my questions -
1) Is it easy to get a positive LMO? i still have 2 terms to complete my masters degree and its a temporary assignment for 8 months
2) The pay is really good would this increase my chances? How long does it take to get the LMO result?
3) And how long would it take to get an answer from a work permit application itself?
3) My employer really hasnt spoken about this, would i have to initiate this or shouldnt they know about this? or i have to initiate this? can they back off now - if i ask them about it?

Any answers would really be helpful. Thank so much!!!

From what you are saying here, you are on a student visa and LMO is something that is needed for foreign workers.So, I think you would not be eligible to apply for a LMO.

Although, you are working as an intern, you are rightfully still a student on a student visa. If you have gotten your co-op work permit, you can see that on it your university's name will be mentioned as your employers name. So, why would your university apply for a LMO for a student, as it generally applied by the employers.

I guess your best bet will be to ask your employer to extend the term after you complete 8 months....or impress him so much that he hires you after you finish your school....GOOD LUCK!!!!

Yes. I am on a student visa. I called immigration earlier today and the person i spoke to suggested i would need a LMO. I am not sure how true this is. I am not entitled to a COOP work permit because that is only for undergraduate students. I am a graduate student. I already have an offer later stating temporary employment internship for 8 months. Im just not sure what is needed and what i need to do.

I begin first week in may and i figured its better i know what i have to do now before the start date. Any help or reference would be highly appreciated. Thank you

For oil companies getting LMO is not tough. If they really want it they can do it for you. Other thing My frn did co op for 8 months on offcampus work permit but he did it from may till december. Later he came to know that he was not allow to work full time on this workpermit in fall. you can only work full time on offcampus permit in summer. Its better to talk to your employer about this..and keep us posted. Good luck

My frn got the same offer in 2012..he worked full time in summer than part time rest of the year...see if you can talk about it.

Hi hopeand will,

If you are currently a full time international student at a canadian university, and an internship is part of your curriculum you should be able to get a co-op work permit and you can intern for your employer using your co-op work permit. You do not need a LMO in this case. However, your university should give a letter addressing immigration that the internship is part of your curriculum. Else you can apply for an off campus work permit and then work for your employer. Again in this case you don't need a LMO. After you completion of your program, if your employer wishes to hire you on a full time basis, they can do so and again you don't need a LMO, because you can apply for a post graduate work permit. You can work full time on an off campus work permit if you aren't studying for example a break between semesters like a summer break, etc.

Im not sure i f i can apply for an off campus work permit either because i currently go to school in Saskatchewan and the offer is in alberta? Wont that matter - aren't there restrictions on location on off campus work permit?

I would call HR on monday to verify. My only fear is if in fact i need one and how long it'll take since the start date is in May.

Yes do that.....You have following options

1. 4 month full internship, 4 month part time
2.complete only one 4 month term

Immigration wont give LMO for internship. since LMO is based on labour market opinion which required a
full time offer from a company.

Please use the information from the above website. As far as I can understand there are no restrictions on where you can work in an off campus work permit. For a co-op work permit you have to get a letter from your university to support your application (i.e. that the co-op is part of your curriculum). I suggest you give CIC a call and seek further clarification from them.

I was able to work the full 8 months with a letter from my school stating the experience is related to my degree. talk to your course supervisor if you are in graduate school like i am and they should be able to help you figure it out. it was such a great experience and i was happy i was able to do it.

So, what you're suggesting is that you would take a leave of absence from your studies to take a temporary job (internship), correct? I'm not sure how you could remain enrolled full-time, unless you are currently in the research/thesis stage.

While it is true that co-op permits are for UG students only, the IRCC website discusses both co-op and internship work permits - and I don't see where it says that it must be part of a UG program.

Talk to your university's international student services office. You will get better advice about your options than from the call centre.

But if you cannot get the letter from your department or supervisor, most likely your employer would need to get an LMIA.

If your employer does not want to go for the LMIA, then there *might* be an option through one of the IEC programs -

All of this is time-consuming, Talk to your international student adviser ASAP.

You cannot just take a semester off and work full-time without obtaining a work permit. And if you took a leave from your studies, yes, it would affect your eligibility for the PGWP.

You could discuss doing the internship as part-time off campus employment (maximum of 20 hours per week; you can work full-time during regularly scheduled breaks - e.g. Christmas, summer).
