International travel while waiting for application processing

I am from Australia and currently working in Canada with a 2 year IEC Visa. I am planning on applying for PR with my common-law (Canadian) partner in early 2019 when we will have been living together for a year and I'm wondering if we will be able to take a three week trip to Australia late in 2019? It would be an inland application which I will submit in March 2019 so I am hoping to get an open work permit so I can continue working in Canada while it is processed, but I am worried about whether I will be allowed back into the country afterwards. The information available is quite vague and am hoping someone here can help me out! Will the open work permit allow me to re-enter Canada while my application is processed?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help clarify this!

You shouldn't have any problems, but of course its never guaranteed entry to Canada unless you are a Canadian PR or Citizen. The chances of you getting denied entry are VERY slim especially with an IEC/OWP, but its still up to the individual immigration officer to make a decision.

Thank you for your reply! Do you know of any reasons why the officer WOULD deny entry? I just don't want to have to go on a vacation and constantly worry about being allowed back into Canada after

Its hard to say, even the smallest thing can set these guys off, and suddenly you're in secondary lol. The likelyhood of you getting denied is probably something like 1% or lower as long as you have the IEC or OWP. Just make sure that your work permits will still be valid for a couple of months at minimum, and your passport will also be valid for atleast 6 months as well, other then that I wouldn't worry about it!

When does your IEC permit actually expire?

It expires in April 2019. Do you know if the OWP granted while waiting for an application to be processed is valid for a certain period of time?
The OWP is generally valid for 2 years.

Note that you will not be able to work in the time between your IEC permit expiring in April and your OWP arriving, likely in June-July if you apply in March.
