Seeking advice on how universities treat students who are on study permit and studied 11th and 12th grade in TDSB schools (the parents who have moved to Canada on work permits.)

1. The student after passing 12th Grade - will they be treated as Domestic student and charged local fees or will they be charged International fees?
2. Is there any specific documentation required in these cases?
3. Does the kid need to renew permits after 12th grade to apply for university even if the current one is valid

Your guidance will be helpful. Any consultants you would recommend that we as parents speak to?

There is no different treatment. The student is not a PR or citizen so pays international fees. Doesn’t matter that child went to high school in Canada. No need for a consultant. Student has to decide where to go To school and get admission.

For universities, tuition will be high. For example, for York U, International tuition per year is $33k vs $7k domestic. You will have to show that tuition and living expenses can be paid. All the best for him!

1. International student paying international student fees.
2. He would apply just like any other international student.
3. I believe he can use his existing study permit provided it's still valid but he will need to notify IRCC that he is moving to a new school.

Hi there,

Here are some answers to your questions:
  1. Whether a student who is on a study permit and has studied 11th and 12th grade in TDSB schools will be treated as a domestic student and charged local fees or will be charged international fees depends on a number of factors, including the length of time the student has been in Canada and their immigration status.
If the student has been in Canada for at least 4 years and has a Canadian high school diploma, they will be considered a domestic student and will be eligible for in-province tuition rates. However, if the student has not been in Canada for at least 4 years or does not have a Canadian high school diploma, they will be considered an international student and will be charged international tuition rates.
  1. There is no specific documentation required for students who are on a study permit and have studied 11th and 12th grade in TDSB schools to be considered domestic students. However, the university may ask for proof of residency, such as a Canadian driver's license or a utility bill.
  2. Yes, the student will need to renew their study permit after 12th grade to apply for university even if the current one is valid. This is because the study permit is only valid for the duration of the student's studies.
Here are some consultants that you can speak to:
  • ICLG Immigration Consultantsis a Toronto-based immigration law firm that specializes in helping international students study in Canada. They can provide you with advice on your specific situation and help you with the application process.

  • CanApproveis a Toronto-based immigration consulting firm that helps international students with their study permit applications. They have a team of experienced immigration lawyers and consultants who can help you with every step of the process.

  • Monarch Immigrationis a Toronto-based immigration consulting firm that has been helping international students for over 20 years. They have a team of experienced immigration lawyers and consultants who can help you with your study permit application and answer any questions you may have.
I hope this information is helpful.

An international student is still an international student even if they’ve been living in the country for a certain amount of time. Even if parents are working or studying in Canada students will be expected to pay international fees for college or university.
