Unless you are the worst driver in the world, you should be fine. Hehe. Highways in Canada are huge and wide, there aren't as many people on the roads, and law enforcement is friendlier than some other places, so you should have no problem driving from the first day you arrive and on. Also, as for the IDL, just remember it is only supplementary to your actual driver's license, which is essential to drive from day one. That said, if you don't have an IDL, and happened to be from an English-speaking country/have an English driver's license already, you don't really need the IDL anyway.

Oh, and depending on how long you plan to be in Canada, you might be required to get a Canadian driver's license. Most provinces require that in either 3 months if you become a resident of a province, or, I believe, after one year, if you hold a work permit lasting over a year (not sure the specifics here). But, to start, your current one will be fine.

Totally lost by the above comments.

Traffic is horrible, I live in Toronto 401 construction sucks + Gardner peak timing jams OMG...
Fines are brutle.lol.

Moving back what you asked for--> if you have driving licence in you country you can still you that one for 180 days and if you go for IDL which you can use for next 1yr, but to be frank no good at all untile you have North American driving licence(limited to USA and Canada)- I tell you why-:
1) You can rent a car but have to pay insurance on the top of it but its difficult to rent a car with non NADL.
2) Can Insurance will be sky rocket (for instance Avg auto insurance in GTA cost $300-$500/pm on Canadian DRL).

Seee told you no use for it.llol. and you guys drive other way of the road.

But you can do one thing bring you experience letter from Ministry of driving in your country which says all of your details which help your experience to count while applying Canadian DRL.

Hope it helped 8)
cheers,

IAMRIGHT

PS: Where are you from?

Just to share my experienced, yes you can drive for 3 months and try your best to passed the written and road test within 3 months so you will get Class 5 directly. In my case, at that time I'm holding a Norway Drivers License and been a driver in the Phils. for 5 years. What I did is that, a month after I arrived in BC I took my written exam and booked my road test immediately after passing the written and luckily I passed the road test and they gave me Class 5 DL that valid for 5 years and when I moved here in Toronto I exchanged my BC licence to Class G in Ontario. Btw, be sure that the Drivers Licence you are holding is not expired and you are already a driver for awhile. Because my friend who is holding Phils Driver Licence is just a year since she got it that's why when she took her written exam and passed it in BC they gave her a "L" which is Learners that means she started back to zero and the insurance is totally expensive compared to a Driver who is immediately got Class 5. Good luck. Note: aim to get your Class 5 or Class G (I don't know in Alberta what type/Class that similar to) because if you are holding those type of Licence you will be receiving higher salary and lots of employers are trying to bargain you. (based on my experienced!) God bless!

YOU CAN TRY BROWSING THESE: PRACTICE THE EXAMS ONLINE. ROAD RULES ARE ALL THE SAME except in Quebec I guess.

if you can - especially if you have been driving for a while - get a Driver's Abstract from where you are now. In other forums here - in the PH they get it from LTO and have it authenticated at the DFA. This will help you - the driver's abstract will help you lower your insurance costs.
