Insurance for US Visits while awaiting PR status?

Hi all, I've really been quite stumped by this insurance issue. Any help of any kind would be amazing!

In short, my fiance is a dual citizen (Canada and US) and I'm American, both of us live in the US. After we get married this Summer I am going to apply for out land family class sponsorship but she plans on moving up to Canada immediately after that. I will be going along with her as a visitor and plan to stay until my permanent residency is approved, apply for extensions on my visit as needed.

This leaves us with the issue of what to do about insurance in the US as we'd like travel back to visit family occasionally for Christmas and what not. We currently have US based insurance but it is very expensive and we wouldn't be able to make much use of it in Canada. It seems prohibitively expensive to keep that insurance just for a short visit back to the family.

We looked into travel insurance but the only companies I can find won't provide travel insurance to visit your country of permanent residency (which the US would technically be for me until I receive my permanent residency in Canada). The best I could find was 'world nomads' which will offer me travel insurance as long as I am not within 100 miles of my old address in the US, aka near my family, which is the only reason I would travel back.

Does anyone have any insights or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hi there,

I don't think any company would cover you when you go back to your home country. Why don't you get US travel insurance whenever you go there ? Maybe you can even pay only for the days of your trip, it's usually about $100 a month so it's not that expensive.

In case anyone stumbles on this later I found a company that may work. IM Global offer expat insurance to US citizens who are living abroad and have restrictions on travel other than a requirement to be living in a foreign country for a majority of the year.

To be clear I have not used the service yet, so I cannot comment on its quality, but I plan to sign up in the future.
