I suppose your husband did not explain Canadian health care to you. As a citizen, he will only need emergency insurance for 3 months, after that he is covered by OHIP automatically.

Is your husband planning to sponsor you for PR? As a visitor, you are allowed to stay up to 6 months and not work or study. To have health insurance during that time, I suggest you look for an insurance broker. If you want to stay longer, you should ask for a visitor record when you enter Canada. Americans often don't get a stamp in their passport and you need to be able to prove when you entered if you want to be able to extend your visitor status. If you ask for a visitor record at the border, they can also give you a longer stay right at the start. Arriving with your husband and stating that he is going to sponsor you, you might get a year.

When you apply for sponsorship, although you are staying in Canada, you would be better off applying as if you weren't. That is pick the application forms where it says "not living in Canada". You are still allowed to do that even if you are visiting and it is a lot faster. You could see your PR in 6 to 8 months. After getting the PR, I believe you still have a 3 month waiting period to get covered by OHIP.

If you have a child in Ontario, the child is automatically a Canadian citizen and is covered by OHIP from birth. However, the delievery of the baby will not be covered under OHIP unless you are.
