Is there a particular post or thread that explains the pros and cons of both inland and outland applications.....my wife is here in canada with me so we automatically decided to apply from "in canada".....but now that i have been browsing this site i see most people recommend applying from outland as it is much quicker.... we have not sent in the app yet as i am waiting for some documents, so i would appreciate your comments as i can still change it to an outland application if that makes sense.....

You can try http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/need-you-advise-inland-pr-please-help-t34283.0.html

someone was also looking generally into how to apply.

Basically, outland tends to be faster (inland takes about 12-18 months avg whereas some people have gotten their PR from outland in 6 months or less)
For outland, the PR applicant can leave Canada if they have to (inland, you app likely gets thrown out if you leave Canada)
For outland, there is a right to appeal if your app gets denied (inland, there is no such option)

Positives to inland are basically that while it is a long process, you can stay with your spouse in Canada (as mentioned before, the app will be thrown out if you leave). Also if your wife is on a visitor visa that is coming expired in the near future, you can apply to have that extended right together with an inland app. Outland, I believe, the app for extension has to be separate, and possibly not as likely to be granted, given you are applying for the extension at the same time an outland app for PR is in process.

thanks Dragon...it really is a tough decision but for us i think it is probably better to be together even if it takes longer and yes....i will apply for an extension at the same time as i submitt the PR app if we go the inland route.....it just all seems so unnecessarily complicated.......

I hear ya ::) My husband and I applied inland too last december. My visitor pass ended in january, so we had to get that extended with the app. Haven't heard anything from CIC yet, but from what I've been hearing on these boards, we're in for the long haul. And while I was collecting everything and putting it together, I remember just wanting it sent out and done. It was driving me crazy. Anyway, good luck and keep us all posted!

And if you need to, right on the thread I provided, check out RobsLuv's post, as there is good info there about outland and inland process, especially as it applies to any visitor or work permits you might have to extend.

That's not exactly true. You can stay in Canada while doing an outland application as well and from what I've heard, the extensions for the visitor's status are often approved.
The problem with inland is that if you find that you have to leave Canada for whatever reason (for example a family emergency back home) and then can not return to Canada for whatever reason, the inland application is lost because you no longer qualify as a "family member in Canada".
If you're lucky, an inland application can be finished in under a year. When applying, make sure to also include an application for an Open Work permit - if your application is solid, you will get approval in principle after about 6 months of sending the app in and at that time they will also give you the Open Work permit which will allow the applicant to start working in Canada and let you not worry about the status anymore.
If you're not lucky and your application is not solid (if Vegreville feels it needs further review or possibly an interview from the local CIC office), then you will not get approval in principle and your file will be sent to the local CIC office for them to decide what to do with you. Some offices are busier than others and you might get stuck with an office that takes literally a year or more before they even get to your file. During that time, you have to find a way to stay in Canada and keep your status - if an extension is rejected, what then?

Outland is usually the safer route. That said, a lot of people applying inland have no issues whatsoever with their applications. So, your call.

Right, sorry, that's how I meant to explain it, just not the right words coming out. Thanks, mitamata.

we chose to apply inland so that i could be able to stay with my hubby. we are tired to live in long distance relationship for 4 years and see each other only once a year...so no matter the period of time of procedure..
