Hey Guys,

Getting mixed answers on this topic. Yesterday I recieved my OWP Approval, and within my letter had the following statement:

Document to travel to Canada or re-enter
A study or work permit is not a travel document. To allow you to travel to or re-enter Canada
by air only, we have issued you an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) when we issued your
permit extension. Your eTA is linked to the passport that you used to apply for your permit
renewal. You must travel with this same passport. If you get a new passport, you will need to get
a new eTA.

Does this mean I am able to leave Canada and return multiple times, for say, a trip home to see family and friends?

Cheers.

Hi there,

I don't know if you apply under family sponsorship and what your situation is, however in general, when you have an OWP, meaning when you actually get it on the mail, because it is an official immigration document, you are ok to leave Canada and come back.

This is unofficial because it won't say on the website or anywhere, but it is what actually happens.

The eTA is just a new travel authorization for visa exempt countries but it's not a document that alone guarantees you re-entry if you don't have an immigration document. It's a travel document.

So, you have to wait for your Work Permit to arrive and you're good to go !

If you want to leave Canada multiple times, you should've applied outland.

With an inland application it is not advisable to leave the country too often given if you are denied entry for any reason then your sponsorship application could be considered abandoned. This is why the recommendation if someone expects to go in and out frequently generally the advice is to apply Outland. OK no work permit but a small price to pay to ensure no issues with an application.

You need a ETA or visitor visa leave country, otherwise, you may not able to come back.

CIC SAYS:
However, a work permit isn’t a travel document. It doesn’t give you the right to travel to Canada. Along with your permit, you need either: a temporary resident visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA)

So you can't just leave with a work permit without a ETA or visitor visa. A person I know she is in-land, before she went back to her hometown, she applied a visitor Visa with her, then she got the chance came back.
So you gonna be prepare for everything, and have a strong reason go out, otherwise, the Canada Border my not let you in.

Because the Guide 5289 also mention that :
Important information: if your spouse or partner is already working or studying in Canada and would like to continue, they must apply for an extension before their work or study permit expires.

Leaving Canada can automatically cancel temporary resident status as a visitor, student or worker.

If your spouse or common-law partner leaves Canada before becoming a permanent resident, they may not be allowed to come back. This is especially true if they need a Temporary Resident Visa to enter Canada.

If your spouse or partner can’t return to Canada, you must submit a new application to the Case Processing Centre in Mississauga (CPC-M).

So be prepare everything with you. The ETA or visitor Visa as well.

A condition of the inland route is that you remain inland. While short trips CAN be fine there is no telling.

As another poster has said if for some reason you aren't allowed back in to Canada your inland app will be considered abandoned and you will have no recourse.

It's always going to be a risk, one that nobody here on the forum will be able to definitively say "you will be fine" to. You will be at the mercy of the immigration officer at the airport.
