The OWP is not a travel document if your wife is here on a visitor visa she can go back HOME using the passport that she has but she cannot come back...

Its better you wait for the PR before making any travel plans.

Please note: For visitor visa you can legally stay in Canada only for 6 months and then you need to go back and wait for another six month then only you can return by that time your wife will get the PR... So even though you have a valid visitor visa and OWP you cant travel .. you can travel but you cant re enter.
There is no problem to travel while in the process! They even issue a new visitor visa with your OWP!
In CIC page says that you can travel while in the process, but they can't do anything if you are refused to re-enter in the border.

That's interesting! Well congrats so far! Did your spouse apply for an open work permit as well? And if so, any update on that?
We did not apply for open work permit, because my spouse is out of status.

However since we have been approved in principle we can now apply for OWP. which we will be doing this week.

I disagree with when you are saying "she can go back home for a visit but she cant come back". Also there is no law which says that you MUST leave after 6 months. We must know that the duration of a stay is in the hands of the CBSA officer, however if the officer does not put a date on your passport then your maximum stay is 6 months. However, if you intend to stay longer than 6 months, which you can, then you must apply 30 days before your last day of stay. If you extension is approved, you can stay but if not, then you must leave immediately.

Now, in order to re-enter, if you leave the country, you must meet certain requirements. There is a detailed guideline as to what those requirements are at the government website. I'm yet to hear that someone was denied re-entry. I'm sure it happens all around but I have not heard yet on this forum or otherwise.

Guys,
What about OHIP? It says on OHIP's webpage that the person needs to be 153 days physically in Canada in order to be eligible for the OHIP (and some restrictions more). But I remember that when I received my PR it was only 3 months...
Any one have more information?

How long has your spouse been out of status, if you don't mind sharing? Does that play any role in this fast turn around?

Over 4 years out of status, no this does not. Depends on many variables, including the officer who reviews your application.
