I am currently in the process of sponsoring my husband. We submitted our application for Sponsorship and Permanent Residence in November of 2015 along with his application to renew his Work Permit; his work permit expired in June of 2015. We received an email stating that they need to receive verification that CIC is processing our application before they send him a new work permit. I am curious to know how long it took for everyone else to receive notice from the CIC when they started processing your applications.

What is your question ? How long did it take before we saw online that our application was being processed ?

Was he out of status once the work permit expired? Did he have legal status in Canada when you sent the application in?

If he was out of status when you sent the application in November, he's unfortunately not eligible for the pilot program OWP until after he receives approval in principle. It took us 8 months to get to that point, but I'm told that is actually really fast. The average is ~16 months for sponsor approval and AIP.

We were able to get my husband a pilot program open work permit by applying for a restoration of status along with the work permit form. Unfortunately, this won't be an option for you if your husband has been out of status for a year already - there is only a 90 day grace period in which status can be restored.

As mentioned by dominokitty, it looks like he was out of status from June 2105 until the application was sent in November 2015, and would still be out of status now...which means he doesn't qualify for a new OWP.

This is probably why CIC sent the email, because until his portion of the application starts processing (known as AIP, or Approval in Principle), they won't process the OWP. It could be a number of months (as many as 10) before you hear anything.

If he truly is without status, it's also important for him to be overly cautious. Even something like a routine traffic stop, or police roadblock/checkpoint, could open up a Pandora's Box. A person without status can be removed from Canada, but those with an Inland application submitted seem to have a certain level of protection, but it's not guaranteed.

I have been told AIP could be as many as 16 - 17 months. I have been been waiting 14 months now... I created a MyCIC account OWP still not processed i guess bc I still have no AIP

Yes, it's been hovering around the 16-17 month mark for over a year now, but some people have been getting theirs faster now...while others that applied ~ the same time, have not.

CIC continues to defy any sort of order, apparently, as they must be randomly grabbing applications at will from the massive pile.
