I do remember our lawyer said, that there was no point requesting OWP before AIP. First they have to know that you've met the requirements, and then you can apply for OWP.

Your lawyer was absolutely wrong. I sent in my PR application and OWP at the same time and got my AIP and work permit at exactly the same time. The lawyer probably won't listen and will continue to advise the clients incorrectly but never the less was wrong and has lost you time that you could have been working. If you're going to get paid for advice it would be nice if you were correct.

Question:

My wife is starting a teaching gig in Manitoba and she called to ask if I was covered (not PR yet). THey said once I had a temporary SIN I will be covered. MY question is if I will get a temporary SIN upon receiving AIP and/or OWP?

thanks :)

You become eligible for a SIN with an open work permit, but you still have to take the work permit and your passport to Service Canada and obtain a SIN - they issue it immediately, and then send you a card in the mail a few weeks later. Note that they are phasing out cards (http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/05/15/ottawa-phasing-out-sin-card-to-fight-identify-theft) so at some point they'll stop sending them.

@ wolanila,

I would consider you to call them on a weekly basis until you get a landing date. My wife called them after 7 week and again after 8 week before getting letter in the mail on week 9 after DM.

Everything went smoothly today.
3 questions as usual....

And the agent told me to wait for the PR card to apply for SIN.

Has anyone in Montreal tried to apply for SIN without PR card, please?

All the best everyone!!!!! :)

Some people have gotten SIN on same day of landing. Other people been told to wait for PR card. A mixed bag.

Thanks Screech.

It's just annoying to wait for permanent SIN no that long.
My temporary SIN expires on 28th July next month.

Hope that, I get my PR card before that.

Your patience has been an inspiration to me!

Hey Guys,

It seems like AIP's have come to a halt?
We thought it was only 3 months after the application is in processs. It's now been 5 months since we received our email and 7 since sent.

People on this board were getting AIP's in 2 month or even less

This is becoming very dishearting.

Is there a number we can call?

Any advice.

Thank You

Congrats wolanila!!!

I looked at CIC website and they updated today but they are still "Working on applications received on October 8, 2012"
:( :( :( So disappointed right now :( :( :(

Update to the spreadsheet. My husband got his open work permit today!!

I was hoping the long delay was because we were about to get our DM, but at least we have the work permit!

We got a call from CIC May 27th clarifying some information, I hope that means we are getting close to DM! It has been 5 months since our AIP.

His work permit is good for 1 year and there are two remarks at the bottom: 1) application for Permanent Resident status has received initial approval. (I assume this means AIP), and 2) does not confer temporary resident status.

And below that it says "this does not authorize re-entry".

Are those all standard remarks?

Cheers all!

yes......no one has been getting AIPs or DMs since the end of April!!!.... It seems that the processing office has stopped working on 2012 inland applications!!

called CIC yesterday and learned that Vancouver office doesn't write notes on landing date.. that's what the agent told me.. does anybody know how to get info about landing in Vancouver?

It's been two months already since i received DM letter.:(

I didn't want to dishearten the disheartened... but two days ago...
a school mate whose spouse works for an immigration lawyer firm, indeed everything has come to a halt. Immigration has told her firm that they don't need to give reasons to anyone. They want media attention. They are on hold for an undisclosed period of time. They are weathering a bunch of new storms with all the new visa requirements for foreign workers... They want to show Canadians that they are serious about foreign workers...

How do we get media attention? I am not sure. I am really hoping that was just one officers opinion. However... We have proof the Oct 8 date has not moved for months. I wrote my Federal MLA monday night, but she has not responded yet.
